    • A thyristor controlled power supply forms part of a control system for a drive motor to accelerate and decelerate an endless conveyor belt trained around a guide drum coupled to the drive motor. A tension drum is controllably positioned by a stepping motor to develop a predetermined tension in the conveyor belt. A firing circuit for the thyristors in the power supply lines is controlled by a regulator which receives signals corresponding to the actual tension and desired tension in the conveyor belt during acceleration and deceleration. In one form, these signals are provided by a tachometer coupled to the drive motor and a potentiometer with a motor-driven movable tap. The drive motor for the movable tap may be controlled by an integrating circuit to vary the speed of the tap during acceleration and deceleration of the belt. In a second form, the regulator receives a signal from a load sensor coupled in the drive train for the tension drum and a signal from a manually set potentiometer corresponding to the desired tensioning of the conveyor belt.

    • A longwall mining machine is described which has cutting rolls pivotally mounted about horizontal axes on a machine housing. The support arms enclose spur gears which are in engagement with each other and are adapted to transmit power from a drive motor in the machine housing to the cutting rolls at the free ends of the support arms. The two outermost spur gears in each arm form a gear pump which pumps the oil accumulating in the outer end of the support arm, when in a downwardly inclined position, back into an oil sump in the machine housing.

    • A scraper chain conveyor includes a driven chain having links constructed from material that is round in cross section. Flight attachments are pulled by the chain along a conveyor channel that includes at least two channel sections that are pivotally connected together in an end-to-end relation for angular positioning of one of the sections with respect to the other. The channel section, extending downstream of the pivotal connection with respect to the conveying direction, has a downwardly sloping portion commencing from a transverse plane immediately adjacent the pivotal interconnection. The other conveyor section has top guides extending over it along its opposite sides. Each of these guides has one of their terminal ends lying in a transverse plane adjacent to and upstream of the pivotal interconnection between the conveyor sections. The chain intersects the two transverse planes at points and passes between them along an arcuate path, the maximum height of which from a subtending cord through the points of intersection is smaller than one-half the length of a given one of the flight attachments.
