    • Mining machines, e.g., a coal tunneling machine or a coal face cutting machine, are provided with a sealed indicating apparatus to monitor the operative status of the machine. The indicating apparatus includes a plurality of indicating lamps connected electrically to circuitboards and projecting into openings in a perforated plate. These parts and a symbol plate are sealed within a housing that includes a transparent plate to view each illuminated symbol on the symbol plate representing monitoring locations in the machine. A transparent film with machine function symbols is placed on the outer surface of the transparent plate such that these symbols are aligned with the symbols on the symbol plate within the housing.

    • A thyristor controlled power supply forms part of a control system for a drive motor to accelerate and decelerate an endless conveyor belt trained around a guide drum coupled to the drive motor. A tension drum is controllably positioned by a stepping motor to develop a predetermined tension in the conveyor belt. A firing circuit for the thyristors in the power supply lines is controlled by a regulator which receives signals corresponding to the actual tension and desired tension in the conveyor belt during acceleration and deceleration. In one form, these signals are provided by a tachometer coupled to the drive motor and a potentiometer with a motor-driven movable tap. The drive motor for the movable tap may be controlled by an integrating circuit to vary the speed of the tap during acceleration and deceleration of the belt. In a second form, the regulator receives a signal from a load sensor coupled in the drive train for the tension drum and a signal from a manually set potentiometer corresponding to the desired tensioning of the conveyor belt.

    • Non-contact temperature monitoring of a rotating machine element such as a brake drum by an apparatus including a ferromagnetic insert in the rotating machine element and shielded therefrom by non-magnetic, heat conductive material. An inductive pulse transmitter is arranged to form an air gap with the rotary moving insert. The transmitter delivers an electrical pulse in response to each passage of the insert during rotation thereof. The pulses are amplified and shaped before passing into an integrating circuit wherein the pulses form the control signal connected to a relay for interrupting a power supply to a drive for the rotating machine element when the temperature thereof exceeds Curie Point of the ferromagnetic material. When the Curie Point is exceeded, the insert becomes paramagnetic and fails to produce pulses and disrupts the control signal for the relay.
