摘要： A selective call communication system (10) receives hand written information from a facsimile machine (14) to be delivered to a plurality of selective call receivers (40). The selective call receiver (40) is capable of receiving facsimile information and has a receiver (24) for receiving the handwritten information, a processor (20) for processing the handwritten information. The processor has an image thinner (206) for thinning each line of the handwritten information, a graph model former (208) for forming a graphical model of handwritten information, a graph model reducer (210) for simplifying the graphical model of the handwritten information into a model having a reduced number of segments corresponding to the lines of the handwritten information, and a stroke former (212) for organizing the line segments into as few strokes as possible to recover the handwritten information. A line segment encoder and formatter (214) further encodes the reduced information into relative vectors to further reduce the amount of data. The selective call communication system (10) also has a transmitter (30) for transmitting the handwritten information to at least one selective call receiver (40) capable of receiving facsimile information.

摘要： The present invention discloses a portable computing device (100) including a processor (102), alternate memory (106), and a DRAM memory (108). Under normal operating conditions, providing full functionality of the device, a full code instantiation in the DRAM is executed, providing operating system, user interface and application execution functionality. A reduced code instantiation (114) which duplicates certain elements of the operating system, user interface, and application code is maintained in the low power memory. When a condition occurs that dictates or allows, execution is switched from the full code instantiation to the reduced code instantiation, and the DRAM is shut off.

摘要： A mobile communication device (102) contains both a WAN modem (122) and a PAN modem (134) which operate on interfering radio frequencies. To mitigate interference, and still permit real-time communication operation, the PAN is prevented from transmitting while the WAN is receiving (714). The PAN carries the real-time data via an active link (144) between the PAN modem and a remote device (142). The active link uses a retransmission protocol, which allows recovery of suppressed packets within a given period. The PAN modem is disabled for periods shorter than a maximum time which guarantees success transmission or retransmission of the PAN data. To further aid successful operation of the PAN retransmission operation, the WAN base station aggregates data into a single downlink burst.
