    • An effervescent fuel injector, particularly one suitable for diesel and direct injection engine applications, which is capable of injecting, particularly intermittently, an atomized fuel spray with droplets of a size in the range of 5-6 micron SMD without requiring high pressures is achieved in a preferred embodiment effervescent fuel injector of the valve covered orifice (VCO) type having primary and secondary nozzle valves which remain closed when the control valve is not actuated, but which open one or two sets of nozzle orifices depending on fuel volume requirements. A three-way, on-off control valve is used to trigger commencement of the supply of gas via a control valve simultaneously with opening of at least some of the nozzle orifices. Gas and fuel are mixed in a mixing chamber located upstream of the nozzle valves in a manner creating a gas-fuel aeration, and as the aeration is sprayed from the nozzle orifices, the gas expands rapidly breaking the fuel into fine droplets.

    • The improved needle controlled common rail fuel system of the present invention includes split common rails serving respective sets of unit injectors. Each unit injector includes a mechanically actuated plunger reciprocally mounted to cyclically create gradual periods of increasing pressure in the common rail during the advancement stroke of the plunger followed by respective periods of decreasing pressure during the plunger's retraction stroke. The fuel injectors include a pressure control valve for controlling the amount of fuel pressurized by the plunger and a needle valve control device including an injection control valve for creating an injection event during a pumping event by controlling the fuel flow to drain so as to control the fuel pressure forces acting on an injector needle valve element. A flow limiting device is provided to limit the fuel flow from a control volume to drain during an injection event thus reducing parasitic losses while maintaining quick valve closing. In addition, a pressure energy recuperation means is provided which utilizes the pressure of the fuel in each injector's pressure chamber as a result of the pressure energy stored in the fuel to assist in retraction of the injector plunger during each pumping event.

    • A clamping load distributor disposed and connecting between a fuel injector body and a clamping device. The clamping load distributor functions as an intermediary to transmit the static clamping load from the clamping device to the fuel injector body. The clamping load distributor includes a cylindrically shaped main body having a bore extending therethrough between an upper surface and a lower surface. The upper surface of the main body being adapted for receiving the clamping load from a clamping device. The lower surface having at least one portion normally contacting the deck of the fuel injector body. The clamping device engages the upper surface of the clamping load distributor at a position axially aligned with a portion of the lower surface that normally does not contact the fuel injector body. The geometric relationship of the clamping load distributor functions to more uniformly distribute the static clamping load across the fuel injector body. By spreading the static clamping load more uniformly across the fuel injector body there is a corresponding reduction in timing plunger scuffing, thereby eliminating or minimizing the occurrence of timing plunger seizure.

The high pressure pumps reciprocate to cyclically create gradual periods of increasing pressure in the common rail during the advancement stroke of the plunger followed by respective periods of decreasing pressure during the plunger's retraction stroke. The fuel injectors include an injection control valve and a needle control device for creating an injection event during a pumping event by controlling the fuel flow to drain so as to control the fuel pressure forces acting on an injector needle valve element. A flow limiting device is provided to limit the fuel flow from a control volume to drain during an injection event thus reducing parasitic losses while maintaining quick valve closing. The system also includes an improved fuel injector design including an intensification plunger assembly. In addition, a pressure energy recuperation means is provided which utilizes the pressure of the fuel in the common rail and the fuel injectors as a result of the pressure energy stored in the fuel to assist in retraction of the high pressure pump plunger during each pumping event. In addition, a wiring connection harness is provided which permits the connection of an electrically operated fuel delivery device, i.e. injector, to an electrical source simultaneously with the mounting of the fuel delivery device on the engine.
