    • A compact camera apparatus having an improved display device and circuit mounting board layout within the camera body in relationship to other components to achieve a more compact and efficient space camera utilization. In one embodiment of the camera, a display unit is located on the upper surface of the camera body, and has a portion thereof, such as its drive mechanism at least partially positioned in a space formed between a light projection unit and light receiving of the camera's rangefinder device. In another embodiment, the camera has a mounting board of the required size for holding constituent control circuit components of the camera located in the camera body with attention to the location of the board in relationship to the cartridge compartment and other camera components to provide for a more compact design. A rigid mounting board is used as the mounting board and is located and incorporated within the camera body at the upper, inside portion of the camera body, in contact with the upper end of a reverse loading type cartridge compartment, and extending over a photographic lens barrel and to the upper side of a spool compartment. At least one or more camera components is arranged in a vacant space formed between the mounting board, the photographic lens barrel and the spool compartment. Furthermore, with the rangefinder device and a photometer device both mounted on the mounting board, a portion of the viewfinder unit is located on the lower side of the mounting board.

    • A camera having a lens barrier unit that opens without encountering obstructions in response to the operation of an operating member and without increasing the size of the lens barrel of the camera. The lens barrier unit covers the front surface of a photographic lens in a closed position, and moves clear of the front surface of the photographic lens in an open position. A sliding member, which is a separate member from the operating member, mechanically drives the lens barrier unit to an open position in response to the movement of an operating member by means of the operation for photographic preparation (e.g., when the camera is switched ON), and drives the lens barrier unit to a closed position, by coupling to the movement of the photographic lens unit while moving from the extended position to the retracted position (e.g., when the camera is switched OFF). The camera may include a finder optical system for visually recognizing an image of an object, with the sliding member disposed in the vicinity of a film aperture. The slide member is disposed in a face-to-face position to the finder optical system with the film aperture being interposed therebetween.

    • A camera which prevents an invading body from being photographed and yet prevents a self-timer photographing time from being prolonged wastefully. The camera includes a distance measuring device for detecting object distances, a photo-taking device for effecting photo-taking and an angle of field switching device for switching the angle of field of a photo-taking lens in conformity with ON or OFF switches that are connected to a controller for carrying out a self-timer photographing process. During self-timer operation, the time counting of a main timer is started and object distance is repetitively measured. When object distances vary, time counting by the main timer is interrupted and an auxiliary timer is actuated so that self-timer photographing time is prolonged by the time set by the auxiliary timer. After the termination of time counting by the auxiliary timer, time counting by the main timer is restarted. When the angle of field of the lens is wider than or the passage position of the invading body is nearer to the object, the set time of the auxiliary timer is made longer to thereby prevent the waste of time that is necessary to carry out photographic operations.

    • In a camera, there is a requirement for ensuring the timing of opening and closing a film cartridge light cutoff door when a cartridge chamber lid is opened and closed, and moreover for lightening the operational force for opening and closing the cartridge chamber lid. In view of these requirements, the camera according to the present invention includes a cartridge chamber into which a film cartridge which comprises a light cutoff door is loaded, a cartridge chamber lid which is selectively opened and closed so as respectively to communicate the cartridge chamber to the exterior or to isolate the cartridge chamber from external light, and a door opening and closing mechanism which exerts opening driving force upon the light cutoff door so as to open it, after the cartridge chamber has been isolated from external light by closing operation of the cartridge chamber lid. Preferably, the door opening and closing mechanism comprises an energy storage mechanism which stores energy from the cartridge chamber closing operation in order to open the light shielding door of the cartridge. The opening of the light cutoff door is started only after the cartridge chamber has been isolated from external light by closing operation of the cartridge chamber lid.
