    • A camera having a sprocket with a pair of cogs formed on a periphery for engaging a filmstrip having a row of perforations separated at alternate short and long intervals. The periphery is divided by the cogs into a frictional engaging section which provides frictional engagement of the periphery with the filmstrip and a mechanical engaging section which provides mechanical engagement of the cogs with the perforations. A shutter charging mechanism is operated by rotation of the sprocket driven by the filmstrip through the mechanical engagement between the filmstrip and at least part of the mechanically engaging section of the sprocket. A switch over mechanism disconnects the sprocket and the shutter mechanism in response to rewinding the filmstrip and a locking mechanism prevents reverse rotation of the sprocket in a specific position.

    • A camera with a variable focus lens device, in which a lens position detecting device detects the focal length of the photographing lens from the amount of movement of a movable member that is capable of being rectilinearly advanced and retracted along the optical axis of the photographing lens, in order to provide an autofocusing function to accurately focus upon an object. Thus, the focal length can be detected in a simplified manner, and the influence of errors during assembly of the components of a photographing lens driving system can be minimized. A flare preventing mask effectively prevents flare occurrence in correspondence to variations in the position of the photographing lens. The lens retaining structure simplifies the assembly of the front lens group into a movable lens mount, and reduces the size and weight of the camera. A position sensor is coupled to the movable member which moves while maintaining a predetermined relation with the movement of the photographing lens, and the position of the photographing lens is detected from the amount of movement of the movable member. A key member prevents rotation of the movable lens mount and so allows the movable lens mount to be advanced or retracted a lesser distance than the movable lens mount. The flare preventing mask is mounted on the key member. A rear focusing type autofocusing mechanism is provided by inserting a holder retaining the front lens group into the movable lens mount from the front end of the lens mount.

    • A zoom lens is comprised of a fixed barrel, an intermediate barrel coupled to the fixed barrel through helicoid screws, a movable barrel coupled to the intermediate barrel through helicoid screws, a front lens group fixedly held in the movable barrel, and a rear lens group. The position of the front lens group in the optical axis direction is always determined by the axial movement of the intermediate barrel relative to the fixed barrel and the axial movement of the movable barrel relative to the intermediate barrel. The axial position of the rear lens group is determined by the axial movement of the intermediate barrel relative to the fixed barrel and a cam surface formed in an inner periphery of the intermediate barrel. As the axial position of the cam surface within the intermediate barrel changes with the rotational position of the intermediate barrel, the rear lens group moves in the axial direction relative to the intermediate barrel during zooming. But during focusing, a hindering device is activated to hinder the rear lens group from axial movement relative to the intermediate barrel, so that the rear lens group moves by the same amount in the axial direction as the intermediate barrel independently of the cam surface.

    • A zoom lens assembly has a stationary barrel, a middle barrel and a movable barrel. The middle barrel is formed on its outer periphery at a rear end thereof with a helicoidal thread, which engages with a helicoidal thread formed on the inner surface of the stationary barrel. The movable barrel holds a zoom lens system therein, and is formed on its outer periphery at a rear end portion with a helicoidal thread which engages with a helicoidal thread formed in the inner surface of the middle barrel. The middle barrel is provided at its rear end portion with a driven gear having a small face width. The driven gear meshes with a drive gear through a cut-out of the stationary barrel. Rotational movement of a zoom motor is transmitted to the driven gear of the middle barrel through the drive gear, so that the middle barrel is rotated to move in the direction of the optical axis of the assembly. The gearing portion of the drive gear moves along with the axial movement of the driven gear, so as to maintain the engagement between these gears.
