    • A unit injector for an internal combustion engine has a solenoid valve for closing a fuel overflow passage to determine the injection timing and the injection quantity. A pumping plunger has its outer peripheral surface formed with first and second longitudinal slits both communicating with the plunger chamber, and a circumferentially extending suction slit communicating with the first longitudinal slit and registrable with a fuel intake passage when the plunger is in an extreme position remote from the plunger chamber. The plunger can assume selectively a normal operating position, a starting position, and an emergency stopping position, at respective different circumferential positions thereof. In the normal operating position, the plunger chamber communicates with the fuel intake passage through alignment of the first longitudinal slit or the suction slit with the fuel intake passage, and also communicated and with the fuel overflow passage via the second longitudinal slit. In this position, the fuel injection rate may be reduced by a leakage groove continuous with the first longitudinal slit. In the starting position the plunger chamber communicates with the fuel intake passage through alignment of the first longitudinal slit or the suction slit with the fuel intake passage, but is disconnected from the the fuel overflow passage. In the emergency stopping position, the plunger chamber is dsconnected from both the fuel intake passage and the fuel overflow passage, or the plunger chamber is communicated with the fuel intake passage through the first longitudinal slit during the pressure delivery stroke of the plunger.

    • A bypass controller (30) controls ON/OFF of a three-way electromagnetic valve (62) according to a detection value of a cam chamber sensor (12a). When the cam chamber sensor (12a) detects a viscosity of lubricant exceeding a predetermined allowable value, the three-way electromagnetic valve (62) is controlled to turn ON so that the output side of an oil separator (13) communicates with a bypass route (61). The pressure in the cam chamber (12) is reduced to or below the atmospheric pressure by suction of a compressor (16) with a check valve (14) regulating the pressure in the cam chamber (12) to the atmospheric pressure or above in the bypassed state. When the detection value of the viscosity of the lubricant output by the cam chamber sensor (12a) has become the predetermined allowable value or below, the three-way electromagnetic valve (62) is controlled to turn OFF so that the output side of the oil separator (13) communicates with the check valve (14) and the bypass route (61) is cut off.

    • A distributor-type fuel injection pump of the type including a magnetic valve disposed on the head portion of a pump body, wherein a pair of oil seals is disposed on opposite sides of the feed pump, and a bypass passage bypasses the cam chamber and connects a discharge side of the feed pump and an inlet side of the magnetic valve. With this construction, the fuel is delivered without passing through the cam chamber. On the other hand, the lubrication oil is introduced into the cam chamber through clearances between the drive shaft and the bearings and through passageways defined in the drive shaft. The cam assembly or other movable components are lubricated exclusively with the lubrication oil, so that the fuel injection pump operates stably over an extended period of time.
