    • Apparatus for treatment of material containing biodegradable volatile organic compounds in solid or liquid state, comprises a first chamber having a gas inlet and a gas outlet, the gas inlet being below the gas outlet. Material to be treated is supported in the first chamber between the gas inlet and the gas outlet. The material to be treated is warmed and an upward flow of air is established in the first chamber whereby biodegradable volatile organic compounds in the material are volatilized and become entrained in the upward flow of air. A second chamber has a gas inlet and a gas outlet, the gas inlet of the second chamber being below the gas outlet thereof. A duct delivers gas from the gas outlet of the first chamber to the gas inlet of the second chamber. A biologically active matrix including at least one organism that biologically converts the organic compounds to a non-toxic form is supported in the second chamber between the gas inlet and the gas outlet thereof.

    • A scanner guide for attachment to a pre-existing bar code scanner wand to enable such a wand to read bar coded labels disposed on a cylindrical surface of a relatively small diameter such as containers used for the collection of medical specimens. The scanner guide includes a cylindrical pin having a mounting base for positioning the same in generally parallel relation to a center axis of the scanner wand at a predetermined distance therefrom based upon the diameter of the cylindrical containers whereon the bar coded labels are disposed. A bottom surface of the mounting base is shaped to conform to the contour of the wand whereon it is to be mounted. In such an arrangement the scanner wand is held at a proper disposition in relation to the bar coded label as it is passed in a longitudinal direction over the same on the cylindrical surface. Thus, the proper reading may be obtained with a single passing and the scanning guide eliminates the necessity of repeated attempts at reading the bar code when disposed on a cylindrical surface.

    • A scum removal system for a sewage treatment or clarification tank having a feedwell or skimmer flight includes a scum trough disposed within the settling tank. A floating weir is disposed proximate to the scum trough. A membrane or sheet is partially wrapped or wound about the weir, at least one cable being connected to the membrane for pulling the membrane and concomitantly lowering the weir entrained therewith to permit surface scum to enter the trough from the settling tank. A mechanism for exerting increased tension on the cable to thereby lower the weir below the surface of the liquid in the clarification tank includes a camming lever or arm and an actuator. The lever is connected to the cable, while the actuator is mounted to the feedwell or a skimmer wiper arm so as to engage the camming lever and pivot the actuator lever about an axis. The pivoting of the actuator lever increases tension on the cable and causes the cable to pull the floating weir down in opposition to buoyancy forces tending to drive the weir upwards.
