[Also in Divisions C3 and D1] Textiles and glass slides are treated with a) monomeric compound of the general formula: (wherein X, X 1 each are a halogen atom, Y is halogen or alkoxy or aryloxy, R is H, or monovalent hydrocarbon or monovalent halohydrocarbon radical, m=2 or 3, n=1 or 2, R=1, 2 or 3, q=0, 1 or 2, and (n+p+q)= 4) or b) a linear or a cross linked homopolymer or interpolymer derived from the monomer a) where p is only 2 or 3. The polymer may have recurring units of the general formula: (wherein X, X 1 , R and m are defined above, a=0 to 1, b=1 to 1.5, c=1 to 2 and (a+2b +c)=4. The polymers of the invention are applied to the fibrous material in conventional manner, dissolved in an inert volatile solvent such as Cl 3 CCF 3 or in an aqueous emulsion. The treated substrate is then subjected to conventional curing in order to bond the polymer to the fibres. The monomers, in the form of vapour, pure liquid or solution in an inert volatile solvent may be applied to the fibrous substrate whereby reaction occurs with reactive sites on the fibres and bonding occurs. Fibrous materials such as paper, cotton, linen, hemp, jute, ramie, sisal, rayons, ethyl cellulose, natural proteinous fibres, leather, fur, nylon, polyacrylonitrile polyurethane, polyethylene terephthalate, asbestos or glass, amongst others, may be treated with compounds of the invention. In Example 19 the monomer 3- (heptafluoroisopropoxy) propyltrichlorosilane in toluene solution is applied to swatches of wool and cotton with subsequent drying in air. In Example 22 the polymer, derived by hydrolysis of the monomer used in Example 19, is dissolved in Cl 3 CCF 3 and swatches of wool fabric are immersed therein, air dried and cured at 150‹C. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 869,343.
