    • An electronic typewriter comprising: a keyboard having a plurality of keys and generating an encoded signal in response to the depression of each key; a printing unit having a print wheel with a plurality of type elements disposed around the periphery thereof, a step motor for rotating the print wheel, a print hammer for impacting the type element brought to a printing position, an ink ribbon, and a ribbon drive mechanism for bringing the ink ribbon to the printing position; and an electronic control circuit for coupling the keyboard to the printing unit. The electronic control circuit controls the rotation of the step motor according to the encoded signal received from the keyboard so as to bring a type element selected by the encoded signal to the printing position within a short time for executing quicker printing, and further controls the action of both the print hammer and the ribbon drive mechanism in response to the rotation of the step motor.

    • A ribbon cartridge includes a pair of housings having apertures, a pair of ribbon spools rotatably supported in the housings, and a ribbon wound on the spools. A portion of the ribbon is exposed to the outside of the housings through the apertures when the ribbon is fed from one spool to the other. Each housing rotatably supporting a hold member. The hold member has a holding portion which is movable across a ribbon passage within the respective housings for holding the ribbon and has an engaging portion which is engageable with teeth on a flange of each spool, and each hold member is biased by a spring member. When the cartridge is removed from the typewriter, the holding portion is moved across the ribbon passage and a portion of the ribbon slackened and exposed from the housing is tensioned. The engaging portion prevents the rotation of the respective spools by the biasing force of the spring member, and when the cartridge is installed in the typewriter, the hold member is retracted to a released position by a retract member of the typewriter.

    • An automatic paper loading apparatus for a typewriter provided with a platen, feed rolls, and a paper bail. The paper loading apparatus essentially includes a paper alignment member pivotally mounted on a frame, a paper guide carried by a movable carriage, and three controllers, from first to third. The paper alignment member is engaged with the leading edge of an inserted printing paper while the feed rolls are spaced from the platen. The feed rolls are urged on the aligned paper and the paper alignment member is spaced from the platen for being disengaged from the leading edge of the printing paper owing to a manual operation of a lever. Upon operation of a manual member on a keyboard, the first controller drives a platen drive motor for a predetermined time duration so as to feed the paper by a predetermined amount, the second controller drives a carriage drive motor for moving the paper guide to the center portion of the printing line on the surface of the platen so as to guide the leading edge of the paper passing the printing line, and the third controller energizes a solenoid for keeping the paper bail in a position spaced from the platen while the leading edge of the paper passes between the paper bail and the platen.

    • In a ribbon changing mechanism, a ribbon retaining portion of the ribbon vibrator lifts a printing ribbon from a lowered non-printing position to an elevated printing position, in response to the printing operation. When a push button is depressed for retaining an actuating lever in a first position where said ribbon vibrator is shifted to a ribbon changing position, the ribbon vibrator connected to the actuating lever is moved upward from the lowered non-printing position to the ribbon changing position, independently of the printing operation and retained in the ribbon changing position. The ribbon retaining portion is comprised of a rear ribbon retaining member and a front ribbon retaining member, which defines a pair of ribbon passages having closed top and bottom portions in combination with both ribbon retaining members. The actuating lever is operatively connected to an opener shaft, so that when the push button is depressed, the opener shaft may be brought into engagement with the front ribbon retaining member, and then the top portions of the ribbon passages are opened. By depressing the push button, a top cover of the typewriter is moved to an open position. If the top cover is brought into a closed position, the actuating lever is returned to the second position, whereas the top portions of the ribbon passages are closed.
