摘要： Optical channel waveguide switches/modulators having polarization-independent operation are disclosed. Electrodes are disposed in proximity to the waveguide channels to provide an electric field that is primarily horizontally directed in at least one channel and an electric field that is primarily vertically directed in at least one channel. Since the different electric-field orientations electrooptically induce different changes in the index of refraction for waves of different polarization in the guides, this permits improved electrooptic control over both TM-like and TE-like modes. Embodiments of both modal interference switches/modulators and branching waveguide switches/modulators are disclosed.

摘要： Two input transducers launch oppositely-propagating acoustic surface waves on a piezoelectric substrate. The waves are compressed to a smaller beamwidth and then laterally confined in a diffused channel waveguide where non-linear interaction occurs at increased energy densities due to the beam compression. In one embodiment the beam compression is accomplished in multistrip couplers. In another embodiment, diffused horn-shaped channels are provided for compressing the beamwidth. Both piezoelectric and semiconductor convolvers are disclosed.

摘要： An optical fiber sensor for detecting the presence of magnetic fields. Light carrying optical fibers are arranged in the form of a dual path interferometer wherein the separate paths define sensing and reference arms. The sensing arm is associated with magnetostrictive material for defining a sensing element which in the presence of a magnetic field undergoes dimensional changes to stretch the optical fiber to change its optical path length thus causing a detectable phase shift in light passing therethrough when compared with the same light passing through the optical fiber of the reference arm. The sensing element is isolated from thermal and acoustic perturbations thus permitting low frequency magnetic field detection.

摘要： A planar, optical star and access coupler for multiterminal communication systems which use multimode fibers as the transmission line either as a plurality of single fiber lines, in multichannel fiber cable or in minibundles. The fibers are placed in a row so that the core ends abut the end of a high-aspect angle rectangular cross section clad ribbon fiber which is preferably not as thick as the diameter of the core of the individual fibers for optimum packing fraction loss. Optical radiation, such as from a laser or light-emitting diode, entering the ribbon-fiber mixer element from all of the fibers on one end will be mixed by the ribbon fiber and be transmitted equally on each of the output fibers. Also, radiation from any one fiber will be divided equally between all of the transmission fibers on the opposite end of the ribbon fiber.
