    • A jumper cable assembly has a pair of clamps at both ends for parallel connection to a weak and a strong battery for starting a motor. Along the side of the assembly is mounted at least one light emitting diodes (LED) that is powered when either end of the assembly is connected with correct polarity to a battery. The at least one LED may illuminate a fiber optic bundle disposed along the length of the assembly. The assembly lights up along its length to thereby avoid tripping over it when it is being used in the dark. When the assembly is connected to a battery with the wrong polarity, the LED will not light up. In an alternative embodiment, a plurality of LED's are disposed along the length of the assembly. The light emitted may be made to flash or change color to indicate the voltage on the battery to which it is connected.

    • Magnetic Force Microscopy (MFM) probe tips that provide enhanced spatial resolution and methods of manufacture are provided. In one aspect, two or more magnetically-decoupled layers may be deposited on an AFM probe in order to create an active magnetic region at about the apex of the probe tip with dimensions less than about 10 nanometers. In another aspect, nanoscale patterning techniques may be employed to fabricate probe tips that possess plateau features. These plateau features may serve as substrates for the deposition of magnetic films having properties similar to magnetic recording media. Machining techniques, such as Focused Ion Beam (FIB) may be further employed to reduce the size of the magnetic materials deposited upon the substrate. Beneficially, because the plateaus of the substrate are substantially flat and of known geometry, and the magnetic properties of magnetic films deposited on flat surfaces are similar to those deposited upon the plateau, the magnetization of the MFM probe tips may be determined to high accuracy. In this manner, fine control over the magnetic properties of MFM probe tips may be achieved, providing enhanced MFM resolution.

    • A luminescent automobile trim apparatus includes structure for positioning on a portion of an automobile to render the portion visible at night an electroluminescent strip formed of several layers of material joined together substantially face to face, including a layer of conductive film, under a first layer of phosphor of a certain first color, under a first layer of electrode material, for radiating light of a certain color. The apparatus preferably additionally includes a structure for altering electrical frequency and voltage applied to the first layer of electrode material for changing the color of the radiated light. The structure for altering preferably includes a musical sound system; where the frequency and voltage are controlled by electrical representations of music within the sound system, such that color changes are synchronized with changes in the electrical representations. The apparatus alternatively additionally includes a second layer of phosphor of a certain second color and an adjacent second layer of electrode material, and structure for selectively directing electric current to one of these layers of electrode material, for activating the particular layer of phosphor material to radiate light of a color corresponding to the phosphor color.
