    • A hierarchical data transmission system is comprised, on the transmitter side, of pre-group multiplexers and a main-group multiplexer and, on the receiver side, of a main-group demultiplexer and pre-group demultiplexers. The main-group multiplexer is fabricated as a parallel-serial converting unit, and the main-group demultiplexer is fabricated as a serial-parallel converting unit. Each of the pre-group multiplexers produces a pre-group data train having a sub-data signal which is also utilized for distinguishing one pre-group data train from another. Each of the pre-group demultiplexers is provided with a discriminator operative, by using the sub-data signal, to distinguish one received pre-group data train from another.

    • A switching system includes a protection switch that operates to switch a working transmission line to a protection transmission line or switch an optional transmission line to the protection transmission line. The protection switch consists of a first speed converting unit, a second speed converting unit and an add-drop unit that handles a lower order signal and is sandwiched therebetween. The optional transmission line for carrying a lower order signal is connected, via the add-drop unit and the second converting unit, to the protection transmission line carrying a higher order signal during an add-drop operation. Alternatively, the working transmission line carrying a higher order signal is connected, via the add-drop unit and the first and second converting units, to the protection transmission line under a through operation mode. The protection switch is preferably realized by using an add-drop multiplexer (ADM).

    • Extension boards and a method of extending boards capable of reducing a fabrication cost and capable of mounting electronic devices on a board with high density which board is mounted onto an electronic equipment from the beginning. In a memory board on which connectors and electronic devices are mounted, each connector is formed of an upper connector and a lower connector, and signal lines extend in the memory board, wherein terminals or connector pins of the upper and lower connectors form one pair in appearance while interposing the memory board therebetween, and each pair forms a terminal group. One of two signal lines connects the connector pin formed on the upper connector with the connector pin formed on the lower connector which connector pins do not form a pair in appearance, while the other of two signal lines connects the other connector pin formed on the upper connector with the connector pin formed on the lower connector which connector pins do not form a pair in appearance, wherein only the former signal line is connected to a device on the memory board via the other connector pin formed on the upper connector. The method of extending memory boards employs the foregoing extension boards.
