    • The present invention is the method for surface treatment of a metal material containing iron and/or zinc, containing component (A) and component (B); where (A) is a compound containing at least one metal element selected from the group consisting of Ti, Zr, Hf and Si, (B) is a compound containing fluorine as a supplying source of HF, wherein the ratio K=A/B between the total mole weight A of metal elements of Ti, Zr, Hf and Si in the compound of component (A) and the mole weight B which when the total fluorine atoms in the fluorine-containing compound of component (B) is converted to HF is within the range of 0.06≦K≦0.18, and the concentration of component (A) indicated by the total mole concentration of metal elements of Ti, Zr, Hf and Si is within the region of 0.05 to 100 m mol/L. To the treating solution for surface treatment, at least one compound containing at least one metal element selected from the group consisting of Ag, Al, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mg, Ni, Co and Zn can be blended. It is possible to form a surface-treated film which is superior in corrosion resistance after being coated on the surface of a metal containing iron or zinc from a solution which does not contain a harmful component to the environment.

    • A metal material having a coating formed by a surface treatment on the surface of the metal material is provided. The coating has an excellent corrosion resistance with or without further coating that is equivalent or superior to the prior art coating formed by zinc phosphate treatment or chromate treatment, is free from sludge formation or environmentally harmful components, and is formed by using a component capable of deposition with a simple method. A surface treated metal material having on a surface of a metal material a coating layer formed by a surface treatment, the coating layer comprising the following components (A) and (B): (A) oxide and/or hydroxide of at least one metallic element selected from the group consisting of Ti, Zr, and Hf; and (B) aluminum element; wherein, in the coating layer formed by the surface treatment, weight ratio K1 (=B/A) which is weight ratio of coating weight B of the aluminum element of the component (B) to total coating weight A of the metallic element in the component (A) is in the range of 0.001≦K1≦2.

    • A surface treatment solution for autodeposition coating treatment of a metallic material, which is an aqueous solution comprising at least one tannin, at least one crosslinking agent having a crosslinking group capable of thermosetting reaction with a phenolic hydroxyl group and/or a phenolic nucleus, ferric ions, soluble type elemental fluorine, and an oxidizing agent, wherein the solids mass concentration ratio of the tannin to the crosslinking agent is in the range of from 1:1 to 1:10, the molar concentration of the soluble type elemental fluorine is at least 3-fold the molar concentration of the ferric ions, and the pH of the solution is from 2 to 6. The surface treatment solution allows shorter process length as compared with conventional coating processes, generates less environmentally harmful by-products such as sludge, has excellent throwing power at the interior of a pocket structure, does not use environmentally harmful components such as chromium compounds, has corrosion resistance, and allows overcoating of a baking finish on the obtained coating film.
