    • An angular position detection device has a rotor that comprises two magnets and a primary yoke, and a stator that comprises a pair of auxiliary yokes and a magnetism detection element. The rotor is fixed to a rotary shaft of an object to be detected. The primary yoke forms a magnetic circuit in a ring, and the magnets are configured so that the intensity distribution of the magnetic field is asymmetric with respect to the center of rotation of the rotor. The magnetism detection element is placed in a gap between the auxiliary yokes. This stator is disposed in the inside of the rotor so that an air gap between the rotor and the stator varies gradually in the circumferential direction. Thus, the magnetism detection element is enabled to produce a linear output over a range wider than 180°.

    • Markers each comprising an electromagnetic coil are installed on the surface of a road at a lateral center line of a running lane of the road at predetermined intervals. Provided for each of the markers, a driving signal generating circuit drives the associated marker so that the marker transmits an alternating current magnetic field. Alternating current magnetic field receiving devices each comprising an electromagnetic coil are installed on the front bumper of a vehicle at positions symmetrical with respect to the lateral center line of the vehicle. While the vehicle is running, the alternating current magnetic field receiving devices sequentially receive the alternating current magnetic fields generated by the markers one field after another. A microcomputer receives detection voltages generated by the alternating current magnetic field receiving devices through detection circuits and determines the lateral position of the vehicle from the detection voltages.

    • An angular position detecting apparatus using a magnetic detecting element, which can voluntary widely set an output change characteristic of the magnetic detecting element with respect to angular positions. An angular position detecting apparatus includes a cylindrical yoke, and a magnet fixed to a predetermined position in the cylindrical yoke. A magnetic detecting element, which is fixed to a rotor, is provided in a magnetic field generated between the magnet and the cylindrical yoke, so that a position of the magnetic detecting element is shifted from a rotation axis P of the rotor by a predetermined distance r. A ferromagnetic thin film magnetic resistance element applies a magnetic field which has intensity so that outputs from the elements are saturated. As a result, the magnetic detecting element generates outputs depending only on a magnetic flux detection angle &thgr;s independent of an influence of changes of magnetic field intensity due to temperature changes. In this case, when at least one of a rotation radius r of the magnetic detecting element and a radius R of the cylindrical yoke is voluntary determined, an output change characteristic of the magnetic detecting element can be voluntary set.
