    • An air-sampling cartridge is disclosed for collecting organic compounds such as N-nitrosamines from air for analysis. The cartridge is formed by joining two injection-molded plastic parts: a generally cylindrical cartridge body into which air-pervious packings of granular adsorbent materials may be loaded, and a cartridge cap which is ultrasonically welded to the body to partially close one end of the cartridge. The cap and body define a cartridge with an inlet and outlet shaped to facilitate connection of the cartridge to a pump used to draw air samples through the cartridge, to allow connection of two or more cartridges in series, and to accommodate standard-sized syringes used in removing trapped compounds from the cartridge for analysis.The cartridge also includes a retention clip integrally molded with the cartridge body and cap for permitting the cartridge to be attached to the clothing of a person during air-sampling. Also provided are two shipping caps which are held within storage wells on the cartridge body during air-sampling and which at other times are used to seal the inlet and outlet of the cartridge to prevent contamination of the adsorbent material and compounds trapped therein.

    • Apparatus and a method for orienting a reagent container in a rack so that the label on the container always points towards the user is provided. The container has an external surface at least a portion of which has an asymmetric perimeter which has mirror symmetry about at most one axis, said perimeter lying in a plane substantially parallel to the base of the container. The rack has an aperture having essentially the same asymmetric perimeter as the container and a size which permits the container to be received in the aperture in only one orientation. In certain preferred embodiments, the asymmetric perimeter is D-shaped, the container has a cavity with inwardly sloping sides and the container includes an integral sight glass by which its contents can be viewed.

    • Disclosed is a sample chamber which is particularly adapted to the spectrophotometric analysis of blood samples. The instrument of which the sample chamber is a part includes means for directing a beam of light through the sample fluid and means for analyzing the light emanating from the fluid. The sample chamber comprises a first transparent member having a flat surface. A surface of a prism is disposed adjacent to the flat surface of the first member, and a resilient gasket located between the prism and the first member seals off a region which forms the sample chamber. A spring on a door, which closes to a position adjacent to the prism, engages the hypotenuse surface thereof to force the prism against the first member and compress the resilient gasket. First and second holes through the prism intersect the first surface thereof at opposite sides of the chamber formed by the gasket to enable the sample fluid to flow through the chamber.
