    • A line trimmer head is provided including a rotatable drive shaft and a housing mounted to the drive shaft for rotation therewith. The housing has an open end and at least one peripheral aperture formed through the housing. A spool subassembly is positioned at least partially within the housing adjacent the open end of the housing. The subassembly includes a spool having at least one flange extending radially outwardly from the periphery thereof, a cog ring secured to the spool, and a ratchet and pawl assembly formed between the cog ring and spool. The ratchet and pawl assembly allows rotation of the spool in a first direction with respect to the cog ring for winding line around the spool while preventing spool rotation in a second direction opposite the first direction to facilitate line feed bumping and line trimming operations.

    • Parallel tube type, gasoline powered, blower/vacuums with improved versatility are provided. In one possible feature, a flapper throttle adjacent to the housing for controlling the engine is pivotable from side-to-side with respect to an elongate handle. The elongate handle is sufficiently long to allow a plurality of gripping positions, while the flapper throttle is sufficiently long to allow the operator to access the flapper throttle from different gripping positions on the handle. In another possible feature, a pivotable lever throttle is provided at an interface of the handle forward portion and a transverse grip portion at the handle forward portion end. The lever throttle has a first end accessible to the operator when gripping the transverse grip portion, and a second end accessible to the operator when gripping the handle forward portion. In another possible feature, a blower/vacuum is provided with a rear handle that increases blower/vacuum versatility in that the operator has a plurality of gripping choices available to him.

    • A line trimmer head includes a line feed configuration which facilitates reloading the head with new line without requiring removal of the spool from the housing. Line is sequentially fed first into the housing through a peripheral opening in the housing, through a guide channel in the spool, and then out of the housing beyond a lower flange of the spool through an opening in the hub of spool. Finally, the line is fed into a small opening in a spool flange to secure the line with respect to the spool. Rotation of the spool inside the housing then causes line to be drawn into the housing through the peripheral opening and wrapped around the spool. The spool provides separate storage compartments for different lines. Additional payout of line is provided when a bump knob is bumped on a ground surface.

    • A follower for translating rotational motion of a cam into reciprocal motion of an intake or exhaust valve is disclosed. The follower comprises a first portion adapted to be pivotably mounted on a follower shaft and a second portion adapted to contact a cam surface. The first and second portions form a generally V shape. The first portion includes a bottom and a pair of side walls connected to the bottom. Each of the side walls has a hole therethrough, and the holes are coaxially aligned to accept the follower shaft. The second portion includes a first end connected to the first portion and a second distal end which contacts the cam surface. Also disclosed is a method of making a follower from common sheet metal.

    • A connector is provided for releaseably fastening a vacuum pipe to the body of an implement which is convertible between a blower and vacuum mode. The vacuum pipe is adapted to attach to an intake port formed in the body of the implement. The vacuum pipe is provided with a collar having a series of angularly spaced apart receptacles each having a passage therethrough provided with a locking surface extending part way along the passage and an abutment aligned with the locking surface defining a space therebetween. The body is provided with a plurality of stakes angularly spaced about the intake port aligned with the passages on the collar. Each stake is provided with a locking face disposed and arranged to overhang the locking surface in the collar and has a thickness substantially equal to the spacing between the locking surface and abutment. The collar is adapted to be angularly positioned relative to the body with the passages aligned with the stakes. The collar can then be turned to move the stakes into the spacing thereby holding the stakes with the locking faces overhanging the locking surfaces on the collar to provide a secure connection between the vacuum pipe and implement intake port. Preferably, the intake port includes a sleeve-like extension to telescopically fit within the vacuum pipe and the groove extending about the sleeve to receive and stabilize an end the vacuum pipe.

    • A coupling for the handle shaft of a flailing line type trimmer which permits angular adjustment of a drive head. The coupling clamps two parts of the handle shaft together. The coupling prevents rotation of one part and permits the selectible rotation of the other. It is preferably formed as a split clamp joining and securely holding the parts in abutment. A pin on the split clamp engages a recess in the end of one handle shaft part to prevent its rotation while a lip on the split clamp engages a circumferential groove in the other handle shaft part to enable it to rotate. A releasable fastener permits loosening of the clamp to allow rotational adjustment of the parts, and their retention at a selected orientation.
