    • A variable reluctance load cell for measuring the static or slowly fluctuating load, or tension, on devices is contained in a support tube. A sensor in the tube utilizes opposing C and I shaped magnetic cores attached to opposing ends of the support tube. A magnetic circuit is formed having an inductance defined by the size of the gap between the magnetic cores with the reluctance dominated by the gap. The sensor inductance is coupled with a fixed, predetermined capacitance in a resonant LC circuit, and the resonant frequency is a function of the gap. The sensor is in a cavity within the tube, and the cavity is sealed in a manner that prevents water or other damaging agents from entering the sensor. In this manner, mounting the sensor and tube to a static device and measuring the AC voltage at the sensor, the amount of load, or stress can be determined.

    • A method of incorporating EL particles includes preparing target areas to receive EL particles and providing EL particles to the target areas. The method may include spot-heating target areas of a flexible substrate to form molten receiving areas adapted to receive an EL particle. EL particles may be provided to the target areas by a carrier tray or by a random process so that the EL particles adhere to the substrate at the target areas and form an EL apparatus. Pressure may be applied to embed the EL particles to a desired depth and top and bottom electrodes may be provided to the EL apparatus to form an EL display. A system for incorporating EL particles into a substrate may include a heat source adapted to spot-heat target areas and a carrier for providing EL particles to the target areas.

    • A system and method for configuring and executing a flexible computer program on a data processing system. The present invention introduces a modifiable construct known as a component interface that can be linked to other component interfaces to specify a computer program. The mechanism for linking and unlinking component interfaces is easy to use and can accommodate component interfaces that are only partially specified. This enables specification of a component interface to be deferred, leading to the following useful consequences: i) component interfaces can be used to represent queries with parameters that are not specified until a context is established, and ii) component interfaces can be organized with varying levels of generality. Component interfaces also permit a “division of expertise” whereby those with expert knowledge may configure application components for use by others. Viewing, modifying, and combining of component interfaces may be performed using a visual component manager. An execution manager operating on the processor reads the component interfaces, creates executable software components (called dynamic objects under the preferred embodiment), and causes them to interact while dynamically maintaining the relationships specified in the component interfaces. The present invention makes it possible for customized computer programs to be configured without the generation of new source code, thereby reducing the incidence of programming errors. By providing a documentation capability and allowing user-experts to interact directly with component interfaces, the present invention eliminates much of the communication problems that have plagued software development under the prior art.

    • A barrel serves as a reservoir in which a treatment fluid is to be contained and within which barrel is a slideable plunger. A connector at one end of the barrel is receptive to attachment of a cannula. Another connector is located at the other end of the barrel. A housing has a coupling attachable to that other connector. On the housing is a detachable fitting receptive of a hose which delivers air under pressure. Included in the housing is an adjustable air pressure regulator in an air flow path between the detachable fitting and the coupling with the regulator being selectively adjustable to control the flow of the air in that path. Associated with the irrigator is a container for the treatment fluid and which includes a pump sealingly attachable to the one end of the barrel for delivering the fluid into the reservoir in response to movement of the barrel.
