    • A method for monitoring vehicle speed is provided. The method includes receiving a current speed of a vehicle and a current speed limit associated with a current location of the vehicle. A current speed range is calculated by comparing the current speed of the vehicle to the current speed limit. Operator alert preferences including a caution range and a warning range are accessed. An alert responsive to the current speed range and to the operator alert preferences is communicated to the operator of the vehicle. The alert includes one or more caution attributes when the current speed range of the vehicle is within the caution range. The alert includes one or more warning attributes when the current speed range of the vehicle is within the warning range. The alert includes one or more at speed attributes when the current speed range of the vehicle is not within the caution range or the warning range.

    • A method of assisting a driver to negotiate a roadway by identifying a curve from a map database (12); calculating an estimated negotiable speed for the curve (14); advising the driver of the upcoming curve (16); warning the driver if he attempts to negotiate the curve at a speed that is greater than the estimated negotiable speed (18); and controlling the vehicle (10) in order to attempt to safely negotiate the curve (20). When the curve is identified in advance rather in real-time, identification of the curve, and possibly one or more characteristics of the curve as well as the estimated negotiable speed, may be stored for subsequent access and use (22). Furthermore, the advisory, warning, and control behaviors may be varied based on pre-established or determined conditions (24). Additionally, the actual vehicle state as it pertains to entering and exiting the curve may be determined (26).

    • A method for providing messages indicating potential hazardous road conditions using a wireless communications network. Vehicles using the network include sensors that are able to detect various potentially hazardous road conditions, such as rain, fog, icy road conditions, traffic congestion, etc. A plurality of vehicles that detect a specific road condition provide a confidence value that the condition exists. The confidence value is then aggregated by the vehicles with the confidence value of the detected condition from the other vehicles to provide an aggregated result that identifies the probability that the detected road condition is occurring. The aggregated result is then transmitted to other vehicles approaching the road condition, possibly in a multi-hop manner. Alternately, the confidence value from all of the vehicles that detect the condition can be transmitted to approaching vehicles who will provide the aggregated result identifying the potential that the condition exists.

    • A method is provided for efficiently transferring records related to places of interest between two communicating vehicles in a V2V system without initially having to transfer full text records. A determination is made as to whether information stored in a memory of the vehicle is redundant with the respect to the other vehicle. A query request is transmitted from a first vehicle to a second vehicle containing specifics as to what records the first vehicle is seeking. Data satisfying the query request represented by global unique index numbers is hashed to determine the similarity between the data of the two communicating vehicles. The similarity is used to determine whether a full filtered set of global unique index numbers should be transferred to the second vehicle for determining which records are not duplicate records. Thereafter, the second vehicle wirelessly transmits to the first vehicle the non-overlapping data that satisfies the query request.
