    • A valve for opening and closing a fluid conduit of the type having a generally wide cross-section, the conduit having a transverse slit therein to allow for movement of a shut-off member into and out of registration therewith. The shut-off member has a spherical shape and cooperates with an apertured member which defines a surface of the same sphere. Both the shut-off member and the apertured member may be arcuately displaced, about a common axis, to establish either a closed or opened conduit with leakage from the conduit in either the opened or closed position being prevented by peripheral portions of the shut-off member and apertured member.

    • An apparatus for plugging the taphole of a shaft furnace is presented which comprises a fixed support frame having a main pivoting joint and a jib device. The jib consists of a rotary support joint. The other end of the rotary support arm having one end which is pivotably mounted on the main pivot joint. The other end of the rotary support arm is pivotably mounted via an auxiliary pivot to a clay gun. A hydraulic jack having a piston and cylinder arrangement is mounted on journals in the fixed support frame. The piston rod portion of the hydraulic jack actuates the support arm wherein the arm and the clay gun attached thereto pivot from a retracted position into an operative position or vice versa. An important feature of the present invention is that the support arm has a bend therein such that the inside of the bend is disposed about the journals of the jack when the clay gun occupies its retracted position. Thus, the journals in the fixed support frame which secure the hydraulic jack are juxtaposed to the main pivoting joint. Still another important feature of the present invention is that the hydraulic jack is positioned so as to continually move through a groove or recess provided for it in the rotary support arm.

    • A device for introducing dosed quantities of pulverized solid materials into a carrier gas stream is presented. The device is particularly suitable for injecting solid fuels into a shaft furnace during metal refining. The device comprises a housing which defines a flow chamber in the axial direction for the flow of pressurized fluid or carrier gas. The housing also has a side aperture therethrough. The side aperture is connected to a container holding pulverized materials. Coaxial inner and outer sleeves, at least one of which is capable of rotation, are located within the housing. The outer sleeve communicates with the aperture while the inner sleeve has an axial bore which provides a passage for the carrier gas. Upon rotation of a sleeve, slots provided on each sleeve will align and overlap with each other and with the aperture to define a variable sized passage between the container and axial bore whereby the pulverized material is delivered therethrough to the carrier gas stream.

    • A mechanism for guiding and positioning a workpiece of a machine for drilling or plugging a tap hole of a shaft furnace, the mechanism comprising a main pivot, a support arm which is rotatably mounted at one end on the main pivot, an intermediate arm having one end thereof pivotally fitted by an auxiliary pivot to the free end of the support arm, the auxiliary pivot being inclined with respect to the main pivot, a workpiece holding bar rotatably and adjustably mounted to the other end of the intermediate arm, said workpiece holding bar capable of having a workpiece mounted thereon, a guide rod pivotally mounted at one end to the intermediate arm and pivotally mounted at the other end to a fixed point in the vicinity of the main pivot, and a drive mechanism serving to pivot the workpiece and the support arm about the main pivot from a retracted position to an operational position, the workpiece being in angular adjustment with respect to the tap hole, the adjustment being performed by rotating the workpiece holding bar with respect to the intermediate arm. In one embodiment of the invention the inclination of the auxiliary pivot with respect to the main pivot is provided for by a fixed bend in the support arm. In another embodiment of the invention, the inclination of the auxiliary pivot is provided for by a support arm having two segments, one segment being hinged and angularly adjustable with respect to the other segment.

    • A device for introducing dosed quantities of pulverized solid materials into a carrier gas stream is presented. The device comprises a housing having oppositely disposed inlet and outlet radial apertures therethrough. The inlet radial aperture is connected to a container holding pulverized materials. Coaxial inner and outer sleeves, at least one of which is capable of rotation, are located within the housing. Upon rotation of a sleeve, pairs of oppositely disposed slots provided on each sleeve will align and overlap with each other and with the pair of oppositely disposed apertures to define variable sized passages. A cheek positioned on one end of the housing has a cylindrical extension portion which extends axially into the inner sleeve and extends across the inlet and outlet apertures. The extension portion includes a channel therethrough which is axially aligned with the first and second aperture means and is also connected to a source of pressurized fluid.
