    • A damper assembly for high temperature or corrosive gases including a flow through housing with a damper blade disposed therein, the damper blade including a metallic plate member attached to a transversely extending support member which extends through openings in the side walls of the housing. The plate member includes means for receiving refractory thereon wherein the refractory substantially covers the plate member and is divided into a plurality of preselected sections, each section being separated by a material having a relatively low disintegrating temperature whereby upon initial heating of the damper assembly to temperatures higher than the disintegrating temperature of the relatively low disintegrating material, the said material disintegrates thereby leaving spacing in the refractory for expansion and contraction over a wide range of temperatures.

    • A valve arranged to close an end of a conduit through which hot, pressurized gas is vented on opening of the valve, especially a blow off valve in a blast furnace, has a U-shaped yoke embracing the conduit with the free ends of its arms mounted for pivoting about an axis which is fixed relative to the conduit and is spaced along the conduit from the said end. At the other end of its arms, the yoke carries a valve closure member which seats on a valve seat to close the conduit, biassing means resiliently urging the closure member into engagement with the valve seat, and lifting means operable to move the closure member away from the valve seat. The closure member and biassing and lifting means can thus be moved out of the venting gas stream by pivoting of the yoke.

    • The invention proposes an arrangement for burning blast furnace off-gas from a bleeder valve. It comprises a bleeder valve (20) having a fixed hollow valve body (22) defining an outlet (26) and a valve seat and a movable obturator (24) that cooperates with the valve seat for closing the bleeder valve and releasing blast furnace off-gas through the outlet. The arrangement includes an apparatus for combustion of blast furnace off-gas released by the bleeder valve (20). This apparatus is characterized by an ignition device (32, 38, 40, 42, 44) that is arranged on or adjacent the valve body or the moveable obturator of the bleeder valve (20) itself. The ignition device (32, 38, 40, 42, 44) has its spatial ignition range located downstream the outlet in a region where blast furnace off-gas released through the outlet mixes with ambient air when the obturator is in an open position so as to allow open-air combustion of blast furnace off-gas released into ambient air at the location of the bleeder valve.

The valve apparatus, which may be either of the outer opening type or inner opening type, also comprises a movable valve member having two seats and a cooperating stationary member or body having two seats, one of the seats of each member being a primary seat that can be removed for repair or replacement. When the primary seats are removed, the remaining seats of the members can engage to prevent flow of gas out of the valve.
