    • A lubricant supply system for a two-stroke internal combustion engine, which system includes first and second adjacently located and substantially sealed crankcase chambers which alternately experience high and low pressure conditions which are out of phase with respect to the occurrence thereof, first and second oil supply passages respectively communicating with the first and second crankcase chambers, an oil supply circuit including an oil supply chamber adapted to contain oil and having therein a formation including therein a recess isolated from the oil supply chamber and communicating with the first and second oil supply passages, a metering rod including therein an indentation and supported in the oil supply chamber for movement in the formation between a first position wherein the indentation is located in the oil chamber, thereby affording filling of the indentation with oil, and a second position wherein the indentation is located in the formation in communication with the recess, thereby affording supplying of the oil in the indentation to the sealed crankcase chambers, and a mechanism for effecting movement of the oil metering rod between the first and second positions.

    • Engine control apparatus and methods for avoiding heavy soot production yet providing smooth engine acceleration and deceleration without significant engine RPM increases and decreases with small throttle movements are described. In one embodiment, once the fuel injection angle reaches the angle at which soot formation begins, one or more cylinders are controlled to operate with later injection angles and lower fueling, which results in lower torque production and lower soot formation, while at the same time the remaining cylinders are set to operate with advanced injection angles and higher fueling, which results in a homogenous mixture of air and fuel, higher torque, and also lower soot formation. Therefore, for a first range of throttle positions, all cylinders operate in the stratified combustion mode. When the soot zone is reached, as determined based on throttle position, then some or at least one of the cylinders operate in the homogenous combustion mode and some or at least one of the cylinders operate in the stratified combustion mode. Once all the cylinders have skipped over the soot zone injection angle, then all the cylinders operate in the homogenous combustion mode.

    • A fuel injected, internal combustion engine that is protected from detrimental ignition due to pocket sparking. The engine includes one or more cylinders into which fuel is injected by an injector. A spark plug is used to ignite the fuel-air mixture within the cylinder. The spark plug is designed with a base and a shell extending from the base to define a hollow interior. A central electrode is disposed in an insulative core and extends through the hollow interior of the shell. The shell is connected to a secondary electrode. A gap is formed between the electrodes for promulgation of a spark to ignite the fuel-air mixture. The detrimental effects of pocket sparking are eliminated by placing a closure member between a terminal end of the shell and the nose of the insulative core. This closure member may be in the form of a lip that extends from the shell into proximity with the nose of the insulative core.
