    • A cochlear implant electrode assembly (10) comprising an elongate electrode carrier member (11), a bioresorbable stiffening element (15) and an outer layer (16) surrounding the stiffening element (15). The carrier member (11) is made of a resiliently flexible first material and has a plurality of electrodes (12) mounted thereon and has a first configuration selected to allow it to be inserted into an implantee's cochlea, and at least a second configuration wherein it is curved to match a surface of the cochlea. The bioresorbable stiffening element (15) has a configuration selected for biasing the elongate member (11) into the first configuration and is made of a second material relatively stiffer than the first material and which dissolves or softens on exposure to cochlear fluids to permit the elongate member (11) to at least approach or adopt the second configuration. The outer layer (16) surrounding the stiffening element (15) is made of a material sufficiently resiliently flexible to allow the elongate member (11) to at least approach or adopt the second configuration. The outer layer (16) has a first rate of cochlear fluid ingress therethrough and has at least one fluid ingress means (21) formed therein. The rate of cochlear fluid ingress through the fluid ingress means (21) is greater than the first rate of cochlear fluid ingress through the outer layer (16).

Both the first and second stiffening elements (15a,15b) are made of a material relatively stiffer than said the material and in combination bias the elongate member into the first configuration. If either the first stiffening element (15a) or the second stiffening element (15b) are removed, the elongate member (11) adopts the at least one intermediate configuration.

    • An implantable tissue-stimulating device comprising an elongate electrode carrier member (11) having a plurality of electrodes thereon. The electrodes are preferably disposed in a linear array on the carrier member (11) and are adapted to apply a preselected tissue stimulation to the cochlea. The carrier member (11) is preformed from a resiliently flexible biocompatible silicone and extends from a distal end (12) to a stop member (13). The carrier member (11) is adapted for intracochlear but extraluminar insertion within the cochlea of an implantee. In particular, the carrier member (11) is adapted to be implanted in the crevice (21) between the spiral ligament (22) and the endosteum (23) of the lateral wall of the cochlea (20). This is a quite different location to the normal placement of the cochlear implant electrode array in the scala tympani (24) of the cochlea (20). The placement of the carrier member (11) is designed to avoid any breach of the internal ducts of the cochlea (20), such as the scala tympani (24) and scala vestibuli (25) so that the normal hydrodynamic behaviour of the cochlea (20) is not affected by any intrusive device. By preservng the normal hydrodynamic behaviour of the cochlea (20), use of the carrier member (11) maximises the possibility of also preserving any hearing of the implantee that is offered by the cochlea (20). Use of the device in a system for masking or treating the symptoms of tinnitus is also described.

    • An implantable tissue-stimulating device comprising an elongate electrode carrier member (11) having a plurality of electrodes thereon.     • A device used for inserting an electrode array into a cochlea of a subject. Particularly, the device is adapted for the insertion of electrode arrays having an elongate carrier member and a removable means extending through the carrier member. The device includes a handle, an elongate positioning member mounted to the handle, an actuator member movable relative to the elongate positioning member, and at least one anchor member connected to the actuator member and engageable with the removable means. On insertion of the electrode array into a subject's cochlea, the actuator member can be moved relative to the elongate positioning member to withdraw the removable means from the carrier member.
