The mode changeover mechanism comprises a base plate mounted with the magnetic head and capable of moving toward the magnetic tape to bring the magnetic head into contact with the magnetic tape and away from the magnetic tape to separate the magnetic head from the magnetic tape, a spring biasing the base plate away from the magnetic tape to separate the magnetic head from the magnetic tape, a changeover cam for moving the base plate toward the magnetic tape against the resilience of the spring, and a motor for driving the changeover cam for rotation. The changeover cam has flat cam surfaces respectively for stably holding the base plate at a position for holding the magnetic head in contact with the magnetic tape and stably holding the base plate at a position for holding the magnetic head separated from the magnetic tape. When in action, the flat cam surfaces of the changeover cam are in plane contact with a portion of the base plate to hold the base plate stably in place.

In another embodiment, a recording/playback head and an erase head are provided separately from each other, and the first and second tape guide members are positioned respectively adjacent to the recording/playback and erase head. The magnetic tape is guided by the first, second and third tape guide members at all times in various modes.

The cam plate also has a displaceable guide portion for allowing the control pin to pass and the drive plate to return to the fully retracted position when the solenoid is again energized and deenergized.

The tape player comprises a pinch roller shaft secured to a head base, and a torsion coil spring interposed between the head base and a slide base for urging the head base toward a reel base. When the slide base is moved toward the reel base, the head base is moved in the same direction by way of the torsion coil spring. When the slide base is further moved after stopping of the head base with the pinch roller contacted with a capstan, the torsion coil spring is compressed thereby to resiliently contact the pinch roller with the capstan with a tape held therebetween. The slide base has first and second guide elements formed thereon. The first guide element is fitted in a first guide slot formed in the head base to guide the head base for sliding movement on the slide base. The second guide element is fitted in a second guide slot formed in a chassis to guide the slide base for sliding movement on the chassis.
