    • A metallic V belt for use in a V-belt-type continuously variable transmission has an endless metallic belt strap and a plurality of metallic blocks each having a strap insertion slot defined therein and opening outwardly of the V belt at one side of the metallic block, the metallic blocks being mounted on that belt strap with the belt strap positioned in the strap insertion slots in the metallic blocks. A retaining belt strap or retainer is disposed in engagement with portions of the metallic blocks in covering relation to the endless belt strap in the strap insertion slots for retaining the metallic blocks against dislodgment from the belt strap. The retainer is in the form of an endless web having a flat transverse cross section and having at least one hole defined in the endless web. The hole in the endless web may be a slot, a narrow slit, or an elliptical hole.

    • A continuously variable V-belt transmission includes a lateral pressure control valve for controlling the lateral pressures of a drive pulley and a driven pulley, and a controller for controlling the lateral pressure control valve. The controller calculates a target belt transmission torque by adding a predetermined marginal torque to a transmission torque calculated based on a signal detected from a driving condition of a vehicle, and obtains, by means of a signal converter, a control signal for controlling the lateral pressure control valve. With this arrangement, it becomes possible to prevent slippage between the belt and pulleys and to produce a most appropriate clamping force even when the lateral pressure control oil pressure is varied due to secular and environmental changes in the pulley lateral pressure control valve, whereby the transmission is rendered durable, efficient in fuel consumption and highly reliable.

    • In a hydraulic apparatus for an automatic transmission having a torque converter with a lockup clutch and CVT, there are provided a first control valve for controlling hydraulic pressure supply to the lockup clutch oil chamber, a first electromagnetic solenoid valve for controlling operation of the first control valve, a second control valve for controlling hydraulic pressure supply to the CVT pulleys, a second electromagnetic solenoid valve for controlling operation of the second control valve, a switching valve interposed between the oil chamber and the first control valve. In the apparatus, when detecting that the first control valve or first electromagnetic solenoid valve is failed and the lockup clutch is locked in engaged condition, current supply to the second electromagnetic solenoid valve is stopped so that it operates the switching valve to disengage the lockup clutch, thereby enabling to forcibly release the engagement without manipulation by the operator.
