    • A safety shield is provided for a medical implement having a needle cannula. The safety shield includes a guard that is slidably movable along the needle cannula from a proximal position where the tip of the needle cannula is exposed to a distal position where the tip of the needle cannula is safety shielded. A hinged arm connects the guard to a hub of the needle cannula or to the medical implement with which the needle cannula is used. The hinged arm can be collapsed upon itself, such that the guard is adjacent the hub of the needle cannula. Alternatively, the hinged arm can be extended to cause the guard to move distally along the needle cannula and into a position for shielding the tip of the needle cannula. A spring may be provided to assist movement of the guard toward the distal shielded position.

    • A safety needle syringe includes a barrel having an inside surface defining a chamber, an open proximal end and a distal end. A movable needle carrier is positioned in fluid-tight engagement with the inside surface of the barrel and includes a distal end, a proximal end and a passageway there through in fluid communication with the chamber. A needle cannula projects outwardly from the distal end of the carrier and includes a lumen in fluid communication with the passageway. A plunger assembly is slidably positioned in fluid tight engagement with the inside surface of the barrel. Structure is providing for allowing the distal end of the plunger to engage the carrier for allowing axially directed and rotational forces applied to the proximal end of the plunger to be transmitted to the carrier. Control structure is provided for helping to prevent movement of the carrier with respect to the barrel during normal use of the syringe while the control structure is in a first locked position and for allowing the carrier to be moved proximally into the chamber through forces applied to the plunger while the control means is in a second unlocked position.

    • A needle assembly includes an elongate needle with a proximal end, a distal end and a passageway therethrough. The assembly has a needle hub with a proximal end, a distal end and an outside surface. The hub has an axial opening therethrough to receive and hold the proximal end of the needle with the distal end of the needle projecting distally axially. The assembly includes an elongate shield with an open proximal end, a closed distal end and a sidewall that has an elongate opening on one side extending from the closed end to the open end. The shield of the invention is movable between an open position, in which the needle is exposed for use by passage through the elongate opening and a latched position, in which the shield is substantially prevented from movement to the open position and the shield substantially obstructs access to the needle. The assembly has a hinge including a mount for holding the shield onto the needle hub with the shield movable between the open position and the latched position by an off-axis pivotal movement about the hinge. There is a latch for releasably latching the shield that includes at least one hook on the proximal end of the shield adjacent the elongate opening and at least one lug on the mount. The lug includes a deflectable projection disposed so that when the projection is deflected toward the axis of the assembly, the hook and the lug are disengaged.

    • A needle shield assembly having a releasable lock of the present invention includes a needle cannula and a hub having a proximal end for connecting to a medical instrument and a distal end connected to the proximal end of the needle cannula. A base member is connected to the hub and includes a deflectable locking arm having a latch surface. A needle shield is hingedly connected to the base member. The needle shield includes a longitudinal opening therein and is capable of rotating back and forth between a first needle protecting position wherein the needle cannula is within the longitudinal opening of the needle shield and a second position exposing at least the distal end of the needle cannula. The needle shield includes a latch surface positioned to engage the latch surface of the base member when the needle shield is in the first position for locking the needle shield in the first position. The needle shield includes an activating member movably connected to the needle shield having an outwardly facing finger pad and a tip portion. The activating member is positioned so that digital pressure applied to the finger pad causes the tip portion of the activating member to push against the locking arm of the base member and deflect the locking arm so that the latch surface of the locking arm disengages the latch surface of the needle shield and so that continued digital pressure on the finger pad causes the needle shield to rotate from the first position to the second position.
