    • A syringe assembly having passive disabling structure includes a barrel and a plunger rod assembly. The plunger rod assembly includes a plunger rod and a stopper connected by an indexing locking element. The number of strokes of the syringe plunger before the stopper is locked into the barrel rendering the syringe assembly unusable is determined by the number of detents on the plunger rod and stopper which engage the locking mechanism. Upon completion of the final delivery stroke, any attempt to withdraw the plunger rod from the barrel will cause the locking element to engage the barrel and trap the stopper in the barrel preventing further use of the syringe.

According to one or more embodiments, the syringe assembly comprises a barrel, plunger rod and stopper wherein the plunger rod further comprises a locking protrusion that locks the plunger rod within the barrel. Certain embodiments further include a frangible portion on the plunger rod that breaks when reuse is attempted. One or more embodiments include a plunger rod and stopper attachment that prevents disassembly of the syringe assembly prior to use. Syringe assemblies of one or more embodiments also include visual indicators or markers indicating whether a syringe assembly is used or the plunger rod is locked within the barrel.

    • A retracting needle syringe includes a barrel having a chamber, an open proximal end and an open distal end. A plunger is slidably positioned in fluid-tight engagement with an inside surface of the barrel. The plunger has an elongated cavity in its distal end and a cover element sealing the cavity. A needle assembly at the distal end of the barrel includes a needle cannula having an inner hub having an open proximal end and a distal end connected to the needle cannula so that the lumen of the cannula is in fluid communication with the chamber. A flange on the inner hub is connected to a proximal end of an outer hub so that the needle cannula projects distally outwardly from a distal end of the outer hub. A spring is contained between the inner hub and the outer hub. A circular release element is movably connected to a proximal end of the flange. The release element has a distal end and a sharp proximal end projecting into the chamber, wherein distal motion of the plunger will cause the sharp proximal end to cut through the cover element and the distal end of the release element to dissociate an outer portion of the flange from an inner portion of the flange allowing the spring to expand and move the needle cannula into the cavity.

A blunt cannula assembly includes a blunt cannula having a proximal end, a distal end, and a passageway therethrough, and a housing having an open proximal end and a distal end joined to the proximal end of the cannula. A spring is provided for helping to position the access cannula within the passageway of the blunt cannula wherein a proximally directed force applied to the blunt cannula will cause the spring to deflect and the cutting edge of the access cannula to project distally outwardly past the distal end of the blunt cannula.

    • A safety shield is provided for a medical implement having a needle cannula. The safety shield includes a guard that is slidably movable along the needle cannula from a proximal position where the tip of the needle cannula is exposed to a distal position where the tip of the needle cannula is safety shielded. A hinged arm connects the guard to a hub of the needle cannula or to the medical implement with which the needle cannula is used. The hinged arm can be collapsed upon itself, such that the guard is adjacent the hub of the needle cannula. Alternatively, the hinged arm can be extended to cause the guard to move distally along the needle cannula and into a position for shielding the tip of the needle cannula. A spring may be provided to assist movement of the guard toward the distal shielded position.
