    • Water-soluble ester intermediates characterized by having 2 and 3 ester groups per molecule are made by condensing (a) a polyol having 2 to 3 hydroxyl groups per mol and a carbon/oxygen ratio between 5:3 and 7:3 with (b) a polycarboxylic acid having a carboxyl functionality of 2 to 3, using an equivalents ratio of polyol to polycarboxylic acid so that the ester intermediate has a hydroxyl functionality of about 3 and using a ratio of 1 mol of polyol per carboxyl group.The ester intermediates are combined in aqueous media with specific amounts of water-soluble aminoplast resin and the resulting combination is cured at elevated temperatures to produce cross-linked, water-insoluble coatings which are suitable as can and coil coatings.Small amounts of epoxy resin which is soluble in the ester intermediate may be used to provide coatings having improved adhesion, particularly under certain adverse conditions.

    • The improved method of the present invention comprises making selected polyesters by condensation polymerization of polycarboxylic acids with a plurality of diols, the diols being in a eutectic mixture having a melting point below that of the individual diols in the mixture. Thus, the eutectic mixture is charged in the liquid state with a sufficient amount of the acid and reacted under condensation conditions to form an ester and to polymerize the ester to the desired extent. A substantial saving in the amount of labor necessary to prepare the polyester is provided by the present method. The diols are preferably selected from the group consisting of neopentyl glycol, trimethyl pentanediol, cyclohexane dimethanol, and 1,6 hexanediol. Usually two diols are employed to form the eutectic mixture. They are normally waxy solids at ambient temperature, but are liquid when mixed in the proper proportions to provide the eutectic. Usually the molar ratio of the eutectic mixture of the two diols varies between about 30:70 and about 70:30. One preferable eutectic mixture comprises neopentyl glycol and 1,6 hexanediol in a molar ratio of about 1:1.

    • The present invention relates to polymer compositions which are useful particularly as flow aids in coating resin formulations. In one embodiment, the polymer composition is prepared by reacting (A) at least one acrylic ester, vinyl monomer or mixtures thereof, provided the acrylic ester is not a hydroxyalkyl acrylate, (B) at least one monoester of an alpha-beta unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, and (C) at least one hydroxy-containing compound selected from hydroxyalkyl acrylates and compounds characterized by the formulaHOR*SH (IIIA)wherein R* is a hydrocarbylene group containing from 2 to about 10 carbon atoms, or mixtures thereof.The invention also relates to improved coating compositions comprising a coating resin and a flow-improving amount of a polymer composition derived from (A) at least one acrylic ester (not a hydroxyalkyl acrylate) vinyl monomer or mixtures thereof, (B) at least one alpha-beta unsaturated carboxylic acid compound containing only one carboxylic acid group, and (C) at least one hydroxyalkyl acrylate. The coating compositions exhibit improved stain-resistance and recoatability.

    • The improved composition comprises: about 43-31 mole % of neopentyl glycol; about 10-21 mole % of 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol; about 10-21 mole % of aliphatic dicarboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of adipic acid, sebacic acid, azelaic acid, 1,12-dodecanedioic acid and mixtures thereof; about 22-16 mole % of aromatic acid selected from the group consisting of orthophthalic acid, isophthalic acid and mixture thereof; about 15-11 mole % of terephthalic acid; and, sufficient condensation catalyst to effect substantial esterification and polymerization of said composition at elevated temperature. The catalyst may be, for example, dibutyl tin oxide. The mole ratio of alcohol to acid is about 1.08-1, 13:1. The polyester resin is provided by reacting the components of the composition at a temperature of, for example, 470.degree. F. for a time sufficient to complete the reaction, the resin having an average molecular weight of at least about 5000 and preferably about 5000-7000. The resin is then cooled, diluted with hydrocarbon solvent and reacted with melamine resin or the like in the presence of a cross-linking agent to provide an improved coil coating. The coil coating when cured as a film on a coil substrate exhibits superior hardness, bend flexibility and resistance to solvent degradation. The liquid coating also resists crystallization in storage and the polyester resin thereof is more readily soluble in common organic solvents.
