    • The sliding wall includes a central wall section and two end wall sections, with the sections being co-planar in the closed state and movable, transversely of the car, out of the closing plane and into a shifting plane in which they are displaceable longitudinally of the car past closed wall sections. During shifting, the sliding wall sections are supported by rollers engageable with a rail, provided in an upper longitudinal stringer, and with the outer lateral surface of an outer lower longitudinal supporting beam, the stringer and the supporting beam forming, in cooperation with two corner posts, a side frame of the freight car. The upper rail is a single rectilinear and uninterrupted rail extending substantially the full length of the upper stringer. Each end section has, in the upper portion of its end adjacent the central section, an outwardly opening pocket having a horizontal catch member extending thereacross. The central section has, at the upper portion of each of its ends adjacent an end section, a sickle-shape catch lever pivotal on a horizontal axis parallel to the length of the car and, in the closing position of the sections, projecting into the pocket of the adjacent end section and engaging behind the catch member. Angle levers are oscillatable about horizontal pivots adjacent the bottom end of the central or center section and carry ball rollers on one end engageable with the supporting beam and, on their other end, hook portions which can pass through cut-outs in the supporting beam to engage against the inner lateral surface thereof. The catch levers and the angle levers are commonly operated by a known actuating mechanism. An oscillatable shaft supports the central section during its movement between the closing and shifting planes. When the center section is shifted to completely overlap an end section, the end section may also be shifted together with the center section. For this purpose, the upper edge of the central or center section has cut-outs permitting the supporting rollers of the end section to move from the closing plane into the shifting plane.

    • A freight car is constructed with an undercarriage having a flat cargo floor and with an upright fixed end wall at each end of the floor. A gantry in the form of an arch extends upwardly from the floor substantially centrally between the end walls and a hood support rail extends between the fixed end walls on each side of the floor. The space above the floor is covered by a hood which is of a length to extend between the gantry and one end wall and which includes a roof portion which overlies the gantry and the one end wall and side wall portions which extend downwardly from each side of the roof. The side wall portions carry rollers or casters which are engageable with the rail for supporting the hood for movement along the rail. The hood may be moved when it is in an open position along the rail for example to completely uncover the space between the gantry and one end wall. Two hoods are advantageously employed, each of which is movable along the rail when they are positioned in an opened position but only alternatively. When they are in a closed position an actuator lifts the side wall of the hood upwardly to move the casters off the rail and to move the side wall inwardly toward the edge of the floor into a closed position.

    • A bunker closure door mechanism for a bunker housing which has an opening with a seat around the opening which is closed by a closure door body, comprises, first and second spaced apart end levers which are pivotally connected between the housing and one end of the door. In addition, central levers are pivotally connected to the door body intermediate its length and pivotally connected at their opposite ends to a toggle lever which is pivotally mounted on the housing. The door body carries guide pins which are engageable in vertical slots of guide members supported on the bunker housing. By means of an actuator in the form of a fluid-pressure operated piston and cylinder connection, a guide rod is actuated to engage the central lever intermediate its length and to pivot it about its connection to the toggle lever and to also shift the toggle lever over its dead center position. The guide pins ensure that the door is held initially in engagement while the toggle lever is shifted beyond its dead end position to permit lowering of the central lever and the door and then subsequent shifting of the door on its pivotal connections by the end levers to a position at which it may be placed on the side of the bunker housing.

    • The valve construction comprises a valve housing which has a housing flow passage therethrough and an intermediate spherical valve chamber in the passage. A pivot member which has concentric end journal portions is rotatably mounted in the housing and has an intermediate eccentric portion which is offset from the end journal portions and is located in the valve chamber. A spherically shaped globe valve member having a valve flow passage therethrough opening at respectively diametrically opposite ends of the valve member is rotatably supported on the eccentric portion which extends through diametrically opposite walls of the globe valve member which has an axis at right angles to the axis of the valve flow path. A dog carried on the globe valve member projects outwardly therefrom into a groove of the housing and limits the movement of the globe valve member relative to the pivot to 90.degree.. The valve is opened by pivoting the pivot member to cause a pin which is carried on the globe member to ride in a 90.degree. arcuate groove defined in the pivot member and without rotating the globe member. Thereat, the pin bears against the end of the arcuate groove of the pivot member so that the valve member and the pivot member rotate together, positioned in the passages in the valve globe in alignment with the passages in the valve housing. This also causes a ball member which is arranged in a recess of the pivot and biased outwardly by a spring to ride into a notch of the valve globe member. Return of the pivot in an opposite direction causes the ball which is engaged in a notch to cause movement of the valve globe member to a closed position at which its flow passage therethrough is not aligned with the flow passage of the housing once again. In the closed position the spherical surfaces of the valve globe member are also urged against an angular sealing member which is carried on a ring which is biased in a direction toward the valve globe member at one end of the housing flow passage. This displacement of the valve globe member is accomplished by the eccentricity of the pivot on which it is supported.
