    • An X-ray unit includes an X-ray tube including a rotating anode coupled to a rotor and a metal frame enclosing the rotating anode and the rotor. A motor, including the rotor of the X-ray tube, and a stator are situated outside the metal frame while an electromagnetic shield is situated between the stator and the rotor to minimize coupling to the stator of magnetic fields resulting from X-ray tube arcing. In one optional embodiment the electromagnetic shield includes an electrically conductive film situated on an outer diameter of the metal frame, and in another optional embodiment the electromagnetic shield includes an insulating film metallized on one surface with an electrically conductive film.

    • A synchronous electric machine having a rotor member and a stator member having a stator core is provided. The electric machine further includes a main machine having a direct current (DC) rotor field winding mounted on the rotor member; and a dual (AC/DC) excitation system. The excitation system includes a rotatable polyphase armature winding in electrical communication with a rectifier assembly for conducting direct current to the rotor field winding of the main machine, and a plurality of DC salient poles and at least one alternating current (AC) salient pole both included in the stator core. A magnetic axis of respective AC field coils is disposed substantially in electromagnetic space-quadrature relation with respect to magnetic axes of adjacent DC field coils, wherein when the respective AC field coils are energized, an alternating current is induced in the polyphase armature winding for providing excitation to the main machine.

    • A four pole induction machine with an extended speed range includes a stator with six independent stator coil groups (a pair of said coil groups constitutes a stator phase winding) and two current regulated inverters. Each of the inverters supplies currents to three said stator coil groups belonging to three different phases. The induction machine is operated in two operation modes: as a four pole machine, when both inverters supply currents of identical polarity, and as a two pole machine, when the polarity of currents supplied by one inverter is reversed in respect to the polarity of currents supplied by another inverter. The switching from the four pole operation mode to the two pole operation mode takes place during a constant power operation of the induction machine.
