    • An oil pressure relief valve for use in the oil pump lubrication system of an internal combustion engine is controlled by both oil pump outlet pressure and by pilot pressure from a pilot valve which is selectively applied by a control member, preferably a two-way valve that is operated by the engine control module. The pilot valve selectively supplies one of the oil pump outlet pressure or the engine gallery pressure to the control member which selectively supplies pilot valve pressure to the oil pump pressure relief valve which has a single piston. The pilot valve includes first and second pistons for selectively controlling back pressure from the pressure relief valve and for managing changes in oil pressure due to changes in the engine gallery to maintain a virtually constant pressure even as oil pump speed increases when the control member connects the pilot valve to the pressure relief valve resulting in a fuel economy benefit and improved control of the oil pump pressure.

    • A variable displacement vane pump provides a substantially constant output pressure in its regulated operation region. A longitudinal axis of the control spring is inclined, with respect to a plane through the rotational axis of a pivot and a contact point between the control ring and the control spring. The inclination reduces the length of the moment arm between the spring and the pivot when the control ring of the pump is moved from the maximum displacement position to the minimum displacement position. The reduced length moment arm offsets the increase in the moment produced by compression of the control spring is offset to achieve a substantially constant output pressure. The control spring is compressed a reduced amount during pump operation to minimize the change in output force exerted by the control spring as the control ring moves between positions.

    • A pressure relief valve for a pump includes a recess in its surface adjacent the high pressure side of the pump. The recess acts as a trap to capture and retain debris particles in the working fluid. By capturing and retaining the debris particles in the recess, jamming of the pressure relief valve in an open position can be avoided. Preferably, the upper edge of the recess includes a chamfered edge which enhances the likelihood of the debris particles entering the recess. Also preferably, the recess can be magnetized, or a magnetic member can be inserted into the recess, to enhance the capture and retention of magnetic debris particles in the recess.

    • A pump system includes pump having a control feature which, responsive to a supply of pressurized working fluid, reduces the pressure of the working fluid pressurized by the pump. The control feature is connected to the output of the pump by a regulating valve. The control feature receives pressurized working fluid to decrease the output of the pump in response to the pressure of the supplied working fluid. A regulating valve selectively connects the pressurized working fluid to the control feature. The regulating valve has a control port to receive pressurized working fluid from the pump to urge the valve to a closed position against a biasing force. A controllable valve is operable to interrupt the supply of pressurized working fluid to control port to alter the output pressure of the pump.

    • A pressure relief valve for use in regulating discharge fluid pressure of a pump includes a casted, metal material housing including a passage therein along a longitudinal axis and inlet and outlet ports substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis and each having walls that are at an angle less than perpendicular to the longitudinal axis wherein the angle of the wall from being perpendicular to the longitudinal axis is substantially equal to the draft angle from the casting of the housing. A first wall of the outlet intersects with the wall of the passage of the pressure relief valve. A valve body disposed in the passage is movable in the passage against the biasing force of a spring biasing the valve body in a first or closed direction wherein the inlet port and the outlet port are disconnected, until the force at the inlet applied to the valve body overcomes the biasing Force of the spring and the inlet fluid is communicated through the passage and to the outlet. The housing includes a counterbore at the intersection of the wall of the passage and the wall of the outlet port to provide a counterbore surface that is perpendicular to the wall of the passage around the outer circumference of the valve body. The top end of the valve body includes a reduced diameter portion and a tapered portion between the reduced diameter portion and the top of the valve body.
