    • An outboard motor includes an engine which is tiltable from a first position to a second position, and a drive mechanism connected to the engine for driving a propeller. When the engine is in the second position, the drive means is tilted upward. An auxiliary fuel tank is connected to the engine for storing fuel returning from a fuel injection valve side of the engine. A high-pressure fuel pump is connected to the engine and the auxiliary fuel tank for pumping fuel from the auxiliary fuel tank to the fuel injection valve side of the engine. A water jacket is connected to the auxiliary fuel tank, for cooling the fuel which is stored in the auxiliary fuel tank. A water pump is driven by the engine to supply water from an external water source to an inlet of the water jacket. A first discharge passage is connected to an outlet of the water jacket. An engine cover is provided, which covers the engine, the fuel pump, and the auxiliary fuel tank. The inlet of the water jacket is configured at a lowest portion of the water jacket when the engine is in the second position. The outboard motor also includes a second discharge passage attached to the water jacket, with the second discharge passage being connected to the inlet and being configured to be below the inlet when the engine is in the second position.

    • In an outboard engine, an electric device is attached, utilizing a cooling water passage cover for closing a recessed part constituting part of a cooling water jacket, to the cover via a boss part, thus providing a compact electric device mounting structure with no such parts projecting from a side of an engine as in a conventional box member. An engine starting apparatus of the outboard engine is provided with an ignition device and a starter motor connected to a battery, and an AC generator is connected to the battery via an electric device having voltage restricting and rectifying functions. When it is cranked by the starter motor or a starter pulley, the engine is started by the ignition device operated by the battery. As it is cranked by the starter pulley while the battery is discharging, the ignition device is actuated by a current generated by the AC generator and rectified by the electric device to thereby start the engine. As a result, the AC generator provided in the engine starting apparatus of the outboard engine can be made small, and high ignition performance can be achieved by either the starter motor or manually.

    • An engine cooling system for an outboard motor includes a thermostat mounted on an upper surface of a cylinder block to open and close a cooling water passage depending on the temperature of cooling water inside the cooling water passage, and a relief valve mounted on an upper portion of a side wall of the cylinder block and located adjacent to the thermostat to open and close the cooling water passage depending on the pressure of cooling water inside the cooling water passage. Since the relief valve is located adjacent to the thermostat, the distance (length of an isolated portion of a drainage passage extending) between the thermostat and the relief valve is very small. In the case where the isolated drainage passage portion has no cooling water flowing therethrough, the pressure of the cooling water inside the cooling water passage rises until the relief valve is open. When the relief valve is open, the cooling water flows into the drainage passage with the result that a sufficient cooling effect can be attained over the entire area of the cooling water passage including the isolated drainage passage portion.
