    • A seat belt retractor including a torsion bar is provided. A second torque transmitting portion of the torsion bar is clamped between a reel and a holder member press-fitted radially in the reel without backlash in the axial direction. A first torque transmitting portion is strictly fixed to a pawl holder without backlash in the axial direction by radially crimping an internal periphery of a left end portion of the pawl holder of a locking means. Therefore, the first and second torque transmitting portions conventionally formed in a torsion bar are effectively used, thereby eliminating a groove for an E-ring as conventionally used and thus simplifying the configuration of the torsion bar. In addition, since the first and second torque transmitting portions can operate without backlash, the occurrence of jarring noise due to vibrations of the seat belt retractor can be prevented.

    • A seat belt retractor with a torsion bar which can receive a large torque and can be easily formed by forging is provided. A reel assembly of the seat belt retractor includes a reel, a torsion bar, and a locking member. A first connection part of the torsion bar non-rotatably couples with concavities of a locking base of the locking member. A second connection part non-rotatably couples with concavities of the reel. The outer peripheries of the connection parts and are torx-shaped having a plurality of concavities and convexities formed in a wave-shape. A ratio R1/R2 of the distance between the tops of the wave-shaped convexities of the connection parts and the axial center of the torsion bar (radius R1) to the distance between the bottoms of the concavities and the axial center of the torsion bar (radius R2) is set to 1.2 to 1.3.

Backlash preventing ribs are provided on the inner peripheral surfaces of the axial hole of the reel on the sides which not subject to a large force between the reel and the torsion bar.     • To provide a pretensioner with improved safety, wherein gas is allowed to escape appropriately in the event that the internal gas pressure rises excessively, and there are no adverse effects on other equipment. A pretensioner is provided with a pipe and multiple balls are provided within the pipe. The balls are metal spheres such as aluminum and the ball nearest the gas generator is formed of a suitable material such as a resin of silicone rubber. A hole is bored in the resin ball in the longitudinal direction of the pipe. The hole is plugged off at the side of the gas generator and is opened on the side of the ball. A through hole perforating the next ball to the resin ball is bored in the longitudinal direction. A rod-shaped piston is stored between the hole of the resin ball and the hole of the next ball. When abnormal pressure is generated, the resin ball breaks and the gas pressure is placed directly on the piston. The abnormal pressure is thereby provided a pathway to dissipate in the direction of the balls'movement.

    • To provide a pretensioner with further improved safety of the device, wherein gas is appropriately allowed to escape in the event that the gas pressure within the pipe rises excessively. A pretensioner is attached to the outer side of the frame of a seatbelt retractor. A pressure container is connected to the base portion of a pipe of the pretensioner. A gas generator is stored within this pressure container. Multiple balls are provided within the pipe. A hole is opened in the side wall of the pipe at the portion positioned between the gas generator and ball. A rivet or other device is driven into this hole. The rivet breaks in the event that internal pressure exceeding a certain pressure (i.e., abnormal pressure) is applied to the pipe, and falls loose from the hole. Alternative embodiments of gas escape mechanisms are provided.
