    • A seat belt retractor has a pretensioner, which has a cover with integral projections made of aluminum. A pretensioner gear with complementary holes is attached to the cover, with the projections inserted into the holes to immobilize the pretensioner gear. A spool driving gear for driving a spool of the retractor is spaced and disengaged from the pretensioner gear so that the pretensioner gear does not interfere with normal operation of the spool. To tension the seat belt, the pretensioner gear is driven to break the projections to mobilize the pretensioner gear, engage the pretensioner gear with the spool driving gear, and drive the spool driving gear, which rotates the spool and tension the seat belt.

    • A webbing of a seat belt engages an opening of a seat belt tension sensor. In one embodiment, the webbing is bunched or folded so as to prevent rubbing against the sides of the opening in the housing and anchor plate, or an outer surface of the seat belt tension sensor. The webbing is maintained in a bunched or folded state using either a set of stitches between the two portions of the webbing of the loop; separate sets of stitches in the respective separate portions; a ring enclosing the two portions; separate rings, or ring portions separated by a spacer, enclosing the respective separate portions; or a sleeve, thimble, or thimble portion of the carriage of the seat belt tension sensor engaging the bunched or folded webbing. In another embodiment, the openings in the housing and anchor plate are sufficiently wider than the opening in the carriage, and the carriage incorporates a flange.

    • To provide a pretensioner with further improved safety of the device, wherein gas is appropriately allowed to escape in the event that the gas pressure within the pipe rises excessively. A pretensioner is attached to the outer side of the frame of a seatbelt retractor. A pressure container is connected to the base portion of a pipe of the pretensioner. A gas generator is stored within this pressure container. Multiple balls are provided within the pipe. A hole is opened in the side wall of the pipe at the portion positioned between the gas generator and ball. A rivet or other device is driven into this hole. The rivet breaks in the event that internal pressure exceeding a certain pressure (i.e., abnormal pressure) is applied to the pipe, and falls loose from the hole. Alternative embodiments of gas escape mechanisms are provided.
