    • An apparatus for direct or indirect application of a liquid or pasty medium onto a traveling material web includes at least one rotatable backing roll wrapped in part by the material web and supporting a side of the material web near the backing roll. The backing roll surface and the material web form a cuneiformly tapering entrance gore and an exit gore. At least one applicator opposes the backing roll and coats a side of the material web away from the backing roll with the medium, and/or further treats the coated material web side. A boundary layer stripper is arranged, in relation to the direction of rotation of the backing roll, before the applicator. The boundary layer stripper removes an air boundary layer entrained by the backing roll and/or the material web. The air boundary layer stripper is arranged in the entrance gore between the backing roll surface and the side of the material web near the backing roll.

    • In a method of direct or indirect application of a liquid or viscous coating medium onto a moving material web, specifically a paper or cardboard web, a layer of the coating medium is applied to the material web by use of an applicator unit. The coating result is then checked for deviations from the desired coating result. In the event that such deviations are detected, and in order to correct them, at least one applicator unit operating parameter is adjusted. The adjustment is made within a short time period, and with the material web running, from an initial operating parameter value that is in effect prior to detection of the deviation. Subsequently, the operating parameter is then reset to at least approximately the initial parameter value, whereby the adjustment and the subsequent resetting may be repeated if necessary. With this method, particularly with a free jet applicator, streaking in the coating profile of the applied layer, caused by dirt particles or other contaminations which have deposited themselves in the jet discharge opening of the free jet applicator, may be eliminated.

The invention is characterized in that the support member (1) possesses a rib- or rail-like extension in its part remote from the curved guide surface at the gap (9), on which there acts a further pressure hose (5 and 5') arranged between a corresponding support surface on the support beam (3) and the extension of the support member (1), essentially in a direction which is transverse in relation to the direction of action of the first pressure hose (4 and 4'), the first pressure hose (4 and 4') being arranged essentially at the free end of the extension (2 and 2') of the support member (1 and 1').

    • A device for applying a liquid to pasty medium to a moving surface, the moving surface in the case of direct application being the surface of a paper, board or other fibrous web. In the case of indirect application the moving surface being the surface of a transfer element which transfers the application medium to the surface of the fibrous web. The device includes an applicator for applying the medium and a doctor device arranged downstream in the running direction of the moving surface for doctoring off and/or equalizing the medium applied to the moving surface. In order to collect excess medium that has not remained on the moving surface and/or has not reached the latter, a flexible collecting part covering the interspace between applicator and doctor device is provided, which extends transversely with respect to the running direction of the moving surface and parallel to the applicator and the doctor device.
