The energy monitoring apparatus comprises a detector (111) configured to detect light from a flashing lamp (11) on an energy meter (10) and provide a detector signal based on the detected light. The flashing frequency of the lamp indicates energy consumption metered by the energy meter. The energy monitoring apparatus further comprises a signal adjusting component (112) configured to process the detector signal and output a rescaled signal (based on the processed detector signal), and a controller (121) configured to adaptively control the signal adjusting component such that, responsive to detection of light from the flashing lamp, the rescaled signal pulsates (or oscillates) around a predetermined threshold level. The present invention is advantageous in that it can be used for a wide range of energy meter lamps.
