    • There is provided a system for integrating at least one residential Plain Old Telephone System (POTS) phone to a cellular phone network. A Subscriber Line Interface Circuit (SLIC 120) interfaces audio from the cellular phone network to the at least one residential POTS phone. A line switcher (122), connected to the SLIC, connects the at least one residential POTS phone to any one of a POTS line or a cellular line. An audio gateway (116), connected to the SLIC, wirelessly receives the audio from a cellular phone connected to the cellular phone network for subsequent transmission to the at least one residential phone and wirelessly transmits the audio from the POTS line to the cellular phone.

    • A digital data modulator is coupled to a source of a digital data signal having a data bit period, and a source of an auxiliary data signal. An encoder encodes the digital data using a variable pulse width code having edges occurring in an interval within the data bit period. A pulse signal generator, generates respective pulses representing the edges of the encoded digital data signal. A carrier signal generator generates a carrier signal having carrier pulses corresponding to the respective pulses during the interval, and modulated by the auxiliary data signal otherwise. A digital data demodulator is coupled to a source of a modulated signal including successive bit periods, each having a first interval containing a carrier pulse, spaced relative to other carrier pulses, to represent a variable pulse width encoded digital data signal, and a second interval during which the carrier is modulated with an auxiliary data signal. A detector demodulates the modulated signal to generate a variable pulse width encoded signal in response to received carrier pulses during the first interval, and an auxiliary data signal during the second interval. A decoder decodes the variable pulse width encoded signal to generate the digital data signal.

    • A digital data modulator includes a source of a plurality of digital data signals having a common data bit period. A plurality of encoders each encode a corresponding one of the plurality of digital data signals using a variable pulse width code having edges occurring in respective non-overlapping intervals within the data bit period. A plurality of pulse signal generators each generate respective pulses representing the edges of the corresponding one of the encoded plurality of digital data signals. A carrier signal generator generates a carrier signal having carrier pulses corresponding to the respective pulses. A digital data demodulator includes a source of a modulated signal including successive bit periods, each bit period having a plurality of non-overlapping intervals respectively associated with corresponding intervals in successive bit periods, each interval containing a carrier pulse, spaced relative to carrier pulses in other associated intervals, representing a corresponding variable pulse width encoded digital data signal. A detector demodulates the modulated signal to generate pulses corresponding to received carrier pulses. A plurality of decoders each decode pulses received in a respective one of the plurality of associated intervals in the bit period to generate the corresponding digital data signal.
