    • The present invention provides methods and compositions for the production of recombinant plasminogen, microplasminogen, and fragments thereof in a duckweed expression system. It is the novel finding of the present invention that a duckweed expression system may be used to produce high levels of plasminogen and microplasminogen. The duckweed-produced plasminogen and microplasminogen can be activated to produce a polypeptide having protease activity. Thus, the invention encompasses methods for the expression of plasminogen, microplasminogen, and fragments thereof in duckweed, duckweed plants that are transformed with expression cassettes for the expression of plasminogen, microplasminogen, and fragments thereof, and nucleic acids comprising nucleotide sequences encoding plasminogen, microplasminogen, and fragments thereof, where these nucleotide sequences are modified to enhance their expression in duckweed.

    • A bleed out prevention system and method includes an adjustable length attachment belt assembly which is passed around the body of a human being suspected of having an injured or severed major blood vessel. The adjustable length attachment belt assembly positions a plunger plate assembly over a location where compressive force can be applied to a portion of the major blood vessel which has not been injured or severed. A compressive force application assembly then applies force which reduces the size of the lumen in the major blood vessel thereby restricting or stopping the flow of blood therethrough.

    • A system and process for classifying a piece of material of unknown composition at high speeds, where the system connected to a power supply. The piece is irradiated with first x-rays from an x-ray source, causing the piece to fluoresce x-rays. The fluoresced x-rays are detected with an x-ray detector, and the piece of material is classified from the detected fluoresced x-rays. Detecting and classifying may be cumulatively performed in less than one second. An x-ray fluorescence spectrum of the piece of material may be determined from the detected fluoresced x-rays, and the detection of the fluoresced x-rays may be conditioned such that accurate determination of the x-ray fluorescence spectrum is not significantly compromised, slowed or complicated by extraneous x-rays. The piece of material may be classified by recognizing the spectral pattern of the determined x-ray fluorescence spectrum. The piece of material may be flattened prior to irradiation and detection. The x-ray source may irradiate the first x-rays at a high intensity, and the x-ray source may be an x-ray tube.

    • A method facilitating a transaction between a camera-phone user and a business entity. The business entity produces a printed medium indicating a transaction. The printed medium includes a barcode that includes direct contact data for communicating with the business entity. The barcode further includes specific transaction data relating to the transaction in the printed medium. Using the digital camera feature, the user captures a digital image of the barcode. The camera-phone is programmed to decode the digital image to retrieve the direct contact data and the transaction data embedded in the barcode. The camera-phone then automatically initiates a direct communication with the business entity via the mobile communications device using the decoded direct contact data. One communications are established, the camera phone further transmits the transaction data derived from the barcode to further facilitate the transaction.

    • An auto-regulated motion power system apparatus that may be used to generate usable electricity from disparate energy sources includes a combination of a variable frequency alternator driven by a primary mover and coupled to a load. An energy control module includes a closed-loop feedback system coupled to a pulse width modulation controller and a switch mode rectifier. The alternator has a modulated control signal input having the ability to vary in frequency and voltage with an output having a controlled voltage and varying frequency. The switch mode rectifier accepts variable AC voltages from the alternator and outputs a constant predetermined DC voltage both to one side of the windings of the alternator and to a first side of a high frequency switch. An output on the pulse width modulation generator is connected to a switch control so that when the switch is closed, current flows through the windings of the alternator and when the switch is open, no current flows through the windings. This modulation of current flow (or lack thereof) regulates the magnetic field strength inside the alternator to produce a stable voltage over a wide range of RPMs.
