    • A method for determining the concentration of a target gas in an environment which utilises a metal oxide gas sensor having a sensitivity to a background stimulus present in the environment, said sensitivity being variable according to the concentration of the target gas, comprises the following steps: (1) calibrating the sensitivity of the first sensor to the background stimulus as a function of the concentration of the target gas; (2) determining a change in the sensitivity of the first sensor to the background stimulus in the environment, caused by the presence of the target gas in the environment; and (3) using the change in sensitivity to the background stimulus determined in step (2) and the step of calibrating the sensitivity of the first sensor in step (1) to determine the concentration of the target gas in the environment.

    • A method of detecting a predetermined alarm condition in a combustion emission gas. The method comprises exposing to the gas a semiconductor gas sensor having a p-type mixed metal oxide semiconducting material of the first, second and/or third order transition metal series, the semiconducting material being responsive both to a change in concentration of a reducing gas in the surrounding atmosphere and to a change in concentration of oxygen in the surrounding atmosphere to exhibit a change in its electrical resistance. The resistance is monitored and an alarm signal is output if the resistance exceeds a predetermined value corresponding to the alarm condition.

    • A conditioned vestibule, control system, and method are disclosed for use with a cold storage doorway that separates warm and cold sides. A heater warms an air stream discharged across the doorway by the vestibule. A control unit operates the heater to maintain an air stream temperature. The control unit continuously monitors the air stream temperature and operates the heater to maintain the air stream temperature in a non-saturated state based on a humidity ratio. One embodiment calculates first and second temperatures based, respectively, warm and cold side tangent lines to a psychrometric saturation curve and based on the humidity ratio. The tangent lines are based on humidity and temperature sensed on the warm and cold sides. The air stream is warmed to at least the greater of the first and second temperatures. One embodiment controls air flow to adjust the humidity ratio to more efficiently operate the vestibule.
