    • A swash plate type variable displacement compressor comprises cylinder bores, pistons, a suction chamber and a discharge chamber. A suction valve introduces a low pressure gas into a working chamber in each cylinder bore. A discharge valve introduces a high pressure gas in the working chamber into the discharge chamber during a compression stroke. A crank chamber communicates to each of the cylinder bores at rear sides of the pistons. A swash plate is tiltably supported on a drive shaft and connected to each of the pistons through associated rods. The swash plate makes the pistons reciprocate in response to its undulating swing motion and varies its inclination angle based upon pressure differential between pressure in the suction chamber and pressure in the crank chamber therefore adjusting discharge displacement. A gas supply passage communicates each cylinder bore to the crank chamber in order to supply gas having a lower pressure than that in the working chamber at the time of completing the compression stroke. A gas bleed passage communicates the crank chamber to the suction chamber in order to introduce gas in the crank chamber into the suction chamber. A pressure control valve is provided in the gas supply passage or the gas bleed passage to control pressure of gas in the crank chamber. A valve is provided for opening and closing the gas supply passage in the middle of the compression stroke of each of the pistons.

    • A piston type compressor has a housing, a crank chamber and a drive shaft supported by the housing. A front restriction and a rear restriction are located in the housing. The front and rear restrictions restrict axial movement of the drive shaft. The front restriction restricts forward movement of the drive shaft. The rear restriction restricts rearward axial movement of the drive shaft. A first clearance is located between the rear end of the drive shaft and the rear restriction when the drive shaft is restricted by the front restriction. A second clearance is formed between the piston and a valve plate when the drive shaft is restricted by the front restriction and when the piston is in the top dead center position. The first clearance is narrower than the second clearance. The method of assembly the piston easily sets the first clearance.

    • A compressor has a front housing, cylinder block and a rear housing. The housings and cylinder block are secured to one another by a plurality of bolts. A plurality of pistons reciprocally move in cylinder bores to compress gas. Each of said bolts has a shaft extending through the housings and the cylinder block. A cam plate is supported on a drive shaft for integral rotation therewith to convert the rotation of the drive shaft to reciprocal movement of a piston in the cylinder bore. The piston rotates about its axis in accordance with rotation force transmitted from the cam plate and abuts against the shaft of the bolt, which extends in close proximity to the piston. The rotating piston abuts against the shaft so that the rotation thereof is restricted. The shaft has a diameter greater than that of a threaded portion formed at an end of the bolt. Since the threaded portion is smaller, the threaded portion does no damage to the piston during assembly.

    • A variable capacity single headed piston, swash plate type compressor provided with a rotation-to-reciprocation conversion mechanism having a swash plate rotated by a drive shaft and formed with annularly extended engaged portions on opposite faces thereof, a pair of shoes located between the swash plate and each of the single headed pistons, each shoe having formed therein an engaging portion circumferentially slidably engaged with one of the annular engaged portions of the swash plate, and a spherical face to be in a displaceable and turnable contact with a cylindrical support wall of a radial recess of each piston and permitting a passage of the swash plate during the rotation thereof. The engagement and contact of the shoes with the swash plate and the pistons provide the respective pistons with an accurate and stable axial support, to thereby prevent a local abrasion of the single headed pistons.
