    • The present invention concerns a method and apparatus for memory and channel sharing in a communication switching network which uses packet switching. In one form of the invention memory and channel sharing is provided within a packet switch. The packet switch includes a memory for storing a plurality data packets and a router that routes data packets from the memory to a particular output port. The router is operable to route data packets to either a dedicated output port, in other words, an output port defined by the virtual circuit path of the data packet, or a shared output port. In another form of the invention memory and channel sharing is provided by a packet switch in conjunction with a terminal. Protection lines which are provided in transmission systems can be used as the shared channels.

    • Security is improved in a communication system in which a communication connection is established when a user who has received a software button on his computing device (a Recipient) clicks on the button. When a Recipient first actuates a software button, a basic type of communication connection is established, during which the Recipient's identity can be verified. The Recipient then establishes a personal identification code, which he will have to provide upon future actuations of the software button. The system then enables other types of communication connections to be established by the Recipient. After the Recipient actuates the software button and verifies his identity, the system remembers the identity and location of the computing device he is using. When the Recipient subsequently actuates the software button, the identity and location of his computing device are checked, and verification of his identity is suppressed if they have not changed.

    • The bandwidth required for a regularly occurring signal, such as a television signal, as received from a signal source can be substantially reduced by not transmitting each and every one of the horizontal scan lines. Rather, firstly, one or more selected lines may be transmitted and, secondly, instead of transmitting the remaining, unselected lines, a signal representing a predetermined arithmetic difference among predetermined ones of the scan lines may be transmitted. The bandwidth may be further reduced by a time expansion of the time interval of the selected line signal and by a time compression of the time interval of the differential signal. The bandwidth required for each regularly occurring signal as received from each of a plurality of N signal sources may be more efficiently used by time compression multiplexing the respective time expanded and time compressed signals.
