    • A drill ahead tool for drilling the initial portion of a subsea well allows an operator to drill ahead after running conductor pipe. The running tool locates in the wellhead housing secured to the upper end of the string of conductor pipe. The running tool has a mandrel that connects into the string of drill pipe. The mandrel locates in a sleeve. The sleeve locates in a body of the running tool. The body has dogs which engage a groove in the wellhead housing to secure the running tool to the wellhead housing while the conductor pipe is being run. The sleeve has a cam on its exterior for maintaining the dogs in the extended position. The drill pipe rotates the sleeve to advance the cam to allow the dogs to be retracted. The mandrel and sleeve have a J-slot and pin that allow the mandrel to be released from the sleeve to continue drilling ahead.

    • A seal assembly includes a tubular member having a longitudinal axis and a tubular member seal profile. A metal seal ring having a proximal base and a distal end has a seal ring seal profile between the proximal base and distal end that contacts the tubular member seal profile. A distal annular recess is in one of the seal profiles, the distal annular recess being spaced axially from the distal end of the seal ring, defining a seal surface between the distal end of the seal ring and the distal annular recess that engages a seal surface of the tubular member seal profile. The contacting portions of the seal surfaces form a metal-to-metal seal area. A proximal annular recess in one of the seal profiles is spaced axially from the distal annular recess, defining a support area axially spaced from the metal-to-metal seal area.

    • A tieback connector connects a riser between a subsea wellhead housing and a floating platform. The tieback connector has a tubular body that stabs into and seals with a casing hanger. A latch member on the tieback connector engages a locking profile to secure the tieback connector to the wellhead housing. A sleeve is slidably carried on the tubular body between a running-in position and a set position. The lower end of the sleeve lands on an upper rim of the casing hanger prior to the seal engaging the seal surface. Continued downward movement of the tubular body relative to the sleeve causes the seal to engage the seal surface and the sleeve to move to the set position. The sleeve has upper end that engages a lower end of the latch member to limit any upward movement of the casing hanger in the wellhead housing.

    • An anti-rotation key inserts into a pocket formed on an outer surface of a male threaded connector. The key has a lower inner side portion for contact with the base of the pocket. An array of teeth on a lower outer side portion of the key bite into an inner wall of a female threaded connector as the key is forced into the pocket. One of the edges of the key is configured such that a line tangent to the first side edge where it intersects the lower outer side portion will intersect a line tangent to a central portion of the lower inner side portion at an angle less than 90 degrees. Relative motion between the male and female threaded connectors in a loosening direction causes the key to pivot about an engagement of the first side edge with the first side wall and bite more deeply into the inner wall of the female threaded connector.

    • A connector for connecting two tubular members has a pin and a box, the box having a bore that receives the pin in stabbing engagement. The bore having a grooved profile, and a split lock ring mounted to the pin, the lock ring snapping into engagement with the grooved profile in the box when the box and pin are stabbed together to lock the tubular members together. An annular wedge shoulder is located on the pin axially spaced apart and facing a rim on the box. The wedge shoulder and rim are inclined relative to each other, resulting in a closer axial distance between them at outer diameters of the pin and box than farther inward. An annular recess is located on the pin at an inner portion of the wedge shoulder, the recess having an inner wall facing outwardly. A split wedge ring is located between the wedge shoulder and the rim, the wedge ring being outwardly moveable from a retracted position in the recess to a wedging position in engagement with the wedge shoulder and the rim to wedge the wedge shoulder and the rim apart from each other. A threaded member engages a threaded hole in the wedge ring and has an inner end that abuts the pin in the recess to push the wedge ring radially outward to the wedging position when the threaded member is rotated.

    • A tieback adapter will connect a tieback string between a subsea wellhead assembly and a platform at the surface. The tieback adapter has a housing in which a sub is carried. The sub has a lower end which contains a seal for sealingly engaging an internal sealing surface of a casing hanger located within the subsea wellhead assembly. The sub is connected on its upper end to the tieback string. The housing has a locking element which locks to an internal locking profile of the subsea wellhead assembly. A retainer carries the sub in an upward position within the housing while the tieback adapter is being lowered into the subsea wellhead assembly. A release device will release the retainer from the sub in response to the landing of the housing in the subsea wellhead assembly. This allows the sub to move downward. A cam surface on the sub simultaneously moves the locking element into engagement with the locking profile and the subsea wellhead assembly housing.
