    • A method and system for configuring one or more prospective-participant nodes as participant nodes so as to enable the prospective-participant nodes to engage in a peer-to-peer communication is provided. In one exemplary embodiment, the method and system may be embodied as a common application that includes logic, in hardware or software form, for carrying out one or more of the functions for configuring one or more prospective-participant nodes as a participant node in a peer-to-peer network. In carrying out these functions, one of the participant nodes discovers its network connection settings, and based on these settings, generates participant-node-configuration data that includes one or more network connection settings that define how to address the prospective-participant node as a participant node. When desiring to join the peer-to-peer network, the prospective-participant node and the participant node may establish a point-to-point communication link by engaging in a discovery process using so as to establish a data-link layer connection. After completing negotiation of the data-link-layer connection, the prospective-participant node and the participant node may communicate over the data-link-layer connection. The prospective-participant node may send to the participant node a request for network access. Responsively, the participant node sends to the prospective-participant node the participant-node-configuration data over the point-to-point connection. And the prospective-participant node configures itself using the participant-node-configuration data so as to become a participant node.

    • A multi-mode mobile station includes a first interface for wireless communication with a wireless local area network (WLAN) and a second interface for wireless communication with a wireless wide area network (WWAN). The multi-mode mobile station is associated with a particular conference bridge, through which all calls to and from the multi-mode mobile station are routed. For example, when a call involving the multi-mode mobile is established via the WLAN, the call includes a WLAN call leg that extends from the conference bridge to the multi-mode mobile station via the WLAN. To effect a handoff during the call, a WWAN call leg is established between the multi-mode mobile station and the conference bridge via the WWAN. The conference bridge bridges the WLAN and WWAN call legs. To complete the handoff, the multi-mode mobile station drops the WLAN call leg and continues the call using the WWAN call leg.

    • A VoIP call signaling method including a codec selection mechanism that measures the effective data transmission rate and other network characteristics. In some embodiments, a proxy performs a network test between itself and both end terminals to quantify the quality of the link before notifying both of the endpoints the optimal codec they should use for a peer-to-peer call. In alternative embodiments, the proxy informs the endpoints of the network characteristics and allows the endpoints to negotiate the codec selection. The network test preferably identifies delay, bandwidth, jitter and packet loss rates.

    • A system, computer program, and method of providing an automatic cooperative response ability to all members of a domain in light of a detected threat or other suspicious activity, such as, for example, a virus or denial of service attack, directed, at least initially, at less than all members of the domain. The system broadly comprises the domain; a log server; a detection server; and a profile server. The domain comprises a logical grouping of members having similar risk profiles. The detection server monitors and parses log and audit records generated by the members and copied to the log server. When the detection server identifies threatening or other suspicious activity it sets an alert status in a security profile stored on the profile server. The members periodically query the profile server for updates to the alert status and are thereby apprised of the alert.

    • A mobile telephone is provided with an emergency beacon. When the telephone's user dials an emergency number, such as 9-1-1, the telephone detects that an emergency number has been dialed, and it activates the beacon. The beacon may be a radio beacon, and, if the telephone is GPS-equipped, the radio beacon may send out the mobile telephone's location. Safety personnel can locate the caller by following the beacon to the caller. Other optional features include an audio emergency beacon and/or a visual emergency beacon, such as a strobe, in addition to or in place of a radio beacon. In one embodiment, the beacon is not activated unless the mobile telephone is unable to complete the call to the emergency number. In another embodiment, the beacon is activated without receiving any remote authorization from, for example, a 9-1-1 call center.
