    • In a wireless communication system (200), a compact control signaling scheme is provided for signaling the selected retransmission mode and codeword identifier for a codeword retransmission when one of a plurality of codewords (CW1, CW2) being transmitted over two codeword pipes to a receiver (201.i) fails the transmission and when the base station/transmitter (210) switches from a higher order channel rank (231) to a lower order channel rank (241), either by including one or more additional signaling bits in the control signal (240) to identify the retransmitted codeword, or by re-using existing control signal information in a way that can be recognized by the subscriber station/receiver to identify the retransmitted codeword. With the compact control signal, the receiver (201.i) is able to determine which codeword is being retransmitted and to determine the corresponding time-frequency resource allocation for the retransmitted codeword.

    • A multi-user MIMO downlink beamforming system with limited feed forward (200) is provided to enable precoding matrix information to be efficiently provided to a subset of user equipment devices (201.i), where zero-forcing transmit beamformers (wi) are computed at the base station (210) and assembled into a precoding matrix (W). The precoding matrix is encoded using a compact reference signal codebook (225, 207.i) for forward link signaling, either by sending bits indicating the index of the transmission matrix used, or by transmitting one or more precoded pilots or reference signals wherein the pilot signals are precoded using vectors uniquely representative of the transmission matrix used which includes candidate reference signal matrices which meet a predetermined condition number requirement, such as a condition number threshold. The precoding matrix information (227) is extracted at the user equipment devices (201.i) using the compact reference signal codebook (207.i) and used by the MMSE receiver (209.i) to generate receive beamformers (vi).

    • A system and methodology are disclosed for exploiting channel correlation in time and/or frequency to reduce CQI feedback in wireless communications systems. By compressing CQI feedback at the receiver to reduce redundancy in CQI feedback information that results from the channel correlation, the average feedback rate is reduced. In various embodiments, redundancy in time may be removed from the CQI feedback by monitoring variations of the CQI information in time at the receiver so that CQI information for a given CQI reporting instance is communicated to the transmitter only if it differs from the CQI information for the previous CQI reporting instance. Otherwise, no feedback is performed. In other embodiments, CQI feedback is compressed by performing a discrete cosine transform (DCT) on the CQI data. The compressed CQI feedback information is then communicated to the transmitter through the feedback control channel where it is decoded into the original CQI information and used to generate signal processing information for various sub-carriers.

    • A MIMO wireless communication system and method reduces the number of recursive operations when decoding received data symbols by decoding the data symbols in pairs rather than on a per symbol basis. Decoding in pairs is facilitated by the determination that errors between selected pairs of data symbols are uncorrelated and identically distributed with a determined variance. Additionally, the system and method can order the pairs and provide decoding rules that result in an insignificant loss of performance for a wide range of signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Furthermore, the system and method exploit the structure of the error covariance matrix to reduce computational demands.
