    • Segmental clutch shoes are operatively deployed between coaxial drive and driven members and are movable radially and circumferentially therebetween into and out of clutching engagement with a drum on the drive member. Equiangularly spaced projections are provided on the driven member corresponding to the number of clutch shoes and extend into recesses provided in the shoes. The trailing side of the projections are each provided with a cam ramp engageable by the shoe. The shoes are normally biased outwardly toward engagement with the rotating drum, and upon initial contact with the drum, are forced circumferentially into contact with the cam ramp. The load imposed on and by the driven member gives rise to a reactive energizing force to effect movement of the shoes outwardly on the cam ramp and into clutching engagement with the rotating drum to rotationally pick up the driven member. A brake band member extends around the periphery of the segmental clutch shoes and is movable between an expanded condition wherein the band is spaced from the shoes and a contracted condition wherein the band engages the shoes to displace the shoes inwardly out of clutching engagement with the drum and to stop rotation of the driven member without interrupting the rotation of the drive member.

    • The disclosure provides for a number of improvements in a brake-clutch mechanism wherein a drum is carried on the drive member for driving engagement by clutch shoes carried by the driven member. The clutch shoes are normally biased into driving engagement with the drum and a brake band is utilized to move the clutch shoes out of engagement with the drum and to stop rotation of the driven member without interrupting the rotation of the drive member. The improvements relate to a higher torque capability for the mechanism, the exclusion of foreign matter from the mechanism, the mounting for the brake band, the use of the brake band to aid in keeping the braking surfaces clean, and provision for cut-off of the power source in the event the brake band should fail. The disclosure further contemplates a novel arrangement for driving and controlling the chain sprocket of a chain saw.

    • A clutch brake assembly which may be used for roll up awnings and the like which will allow the roller on which the awning is rolled to freely rotate in one direction and be locked against rotation in the other direction, the directions of freewheeling rotation and locking being selectable by manual rotation of the cover between either of two toggle positions. The assembly includes a nonrotatable shaft extending through the assembly and fastened by arms to the side of a recreational vehicle or the like. Mounted on the shaft is a rotatable drum on which the awning is to be rolled and unrolled, that drum having a clutch drum attached thereto. Mounted within the clutch drum and rotatable with an actuating cover is a pair of substantially radially movable clutch shoes, each positioned with respect to one cam surface of a double acting cam fastened to the shaft. The actuating cover includes an overcenter toggle device operating in conjunction with the shaft to encourage the cover to either one of two stable positions, causing one or the other of the clutch shoes to engage the associated cam surface of the double acting cam to force the shoe firmly against the clutch drum. Rotation in one direction is allowed however, as such rotation allows the cam surface to release pressure on the clutch shoe, whereas attempted rotation in the opposite direction causing a locking action.

    • The drive transmission includes rotatable coaxial drive and driven members with a hub member disposed therebetween. A first clutch is provided between the hub member and the drive member to drivingly clutch those members together with a relatively high energizing force. A second clutch is provided between the hub member and the driven member to drivingly clutch those members together with a generally lower energizing force. The transmission provides for clutch slippage due to excessive loading at the second clutch connection and thereby generally precludes slippage at the first clutch connection.

    • A centrifugal clutch having an interlocking combination of shoes and stop pins includes compression biasing springs that are adjustable with tamper-free locking, using reversible spring biased wedges that smoothly transition between selected low-gain and high gain engagements within a desired narrow speed range. The clutch also includes a hub, a rotatable drum having a circularly cylindrical inside surface, and a plurality of shoes, each shoe including a rigid metallic shoe member and a lining. A stop pin is interposed between lock portions of each adjacent pair of the shoes for blocking the shoe members from moving radially outwardly into contact with the inside surface of the drum and for preventing separation of the shoes in the event of axial disengagement or structural failure of the drum during high-speed operation of the clutch. The compression biasing springs include a plurality of stacked spring washers assembled on the stop pins with respective adjustment nuts. A wedge member having oppositely inclined wedge surfaces slides in a slot of each shoe, for torque transmission in opposite rotational directions. The wedge surfaces can be asymmetrical for facilitating adjustment of a torque-speed characteristic of the clutch.
