    • An exhaust silencing device connected to an exhaust system of an engine is provided in which two outlet pipes that have at an upstream end thereof an opening portion opening within the silencer main body and that discharge exhaust gas within the silencer main body to an outside thereof are disposed within the silencer main body along a bottom thereof so that the distances thereof from the lowest part of the bottom are substantially equal, and the opening portion of one outlet pipe is directed further toward the bottom of the silencer main body than is the opening portion of the other outlet pipe. Such exhaust silencing device efficiently discharges to the outside the condensed water building up within the silencer main body so as not to impair an effect in reducing exhaust resistance by providing two outlet pipes that guide the exhaust gas to the outside.

    • A liquid crystal display device according to the present invention comprises a first polarizer (1), a second polarizer (17), a liquid crystal cell (20) having a liquid crystal layer (6) provided between a first substrate (1) and a second substrate (2), a transflective layer (7) having openings, a patterning phase retardation layer (9) having retardation in portions other than the portions where the openings of the transflective layer are formed, and an optical element (12) for compensating for an optical property of the liquid crystal layer. The display device thus constructed achieves a high-contrast bright transmissive display, and can also produce a reflective display utilizing an internal reflector type structure.

    • The invention provides a liquid crystal display device having variety in design, comprising a first liquid crystal cell (16) and a second liquid crystal cell (18), made up of a liquid crystal layer sealed in a gap between a pair of transparent substrates having an electrode formed on each of the inner surfaces thereof, facing each other and disposed in that order from the visible side; an absorption-type polarizing film (12) disposed on the visible side of the first liquid crystal cell (16), for absorbing the light linearly polarized in the direction orthogonal to the transmission axis thereof; and a reflection-type polarizing film (14) disposed on a side of the second liquid crystal cell (18), opposite from the visible side thereof, for reflecting the light linearly polarized in the direction orthogonal to the transmission axis thereof.

    • In a reflection-type color liquid crystal display which can display a bright, high-saturation negative-type color display with a background in black or deep color, a pair of polarizing films 8 and 9 are disposed on both sides of a liquid crystal 20 which has a nematic liquid crystal 7 between a pair of substrates 1 and 4 having electrodes respectively, and a twisted retardation film 10 is disposed between the polarizing films 9 and the liquid crystal device 20. The intersecting angle between absorption axes of the pair of polarizing films 8 and 9 is set to be in the range of 60° to 120°, the &Dgr;nd value of the liquid crystal device 20 is set to be in the range of 1500 nm to 1800 nm, and the &Dgr;nd value of the twisted retardation film 10 is arranged to be in nearly the same range as the &Dgr;nd value of the liquid crystal device 20.
