    • A sliver piecing unit 80 includes three sets of separable rollers 804 and 844, 806 and 846, and 808 and 848 for nipping a sliver S1 fed from a consumed can to a spinning machine. A throttling nozzle 870 is arranged between the second and third sets of rollers 806 and 846, and 808 and 848. The draft ratio between the first and second sets of rollers 804 and 844, and 806 and 846 can be varied between 1.0 and 2.0. A sliver feed unit 70 includes a separable first and second roller 702a and 702b for feeding a sliver S2 from a full can to the piecing unit 80 so that the slivers S1 and S2 are combined. The draft ratio between the first and second sets of rollers 804 and 844, and 806 and 846 is controlled to obtain combined slivers of a thickness corresponding to that of a single sliver. A nipping belt 884 and nipping roller 886 are provided at the outlet from the third set of the rollers 808 and 804 for obtaining a rubbing movement in the combined slivers. A breaking element 802 is provided at the inlet to the first set of the rollers 804 and 844 to break the first sliver S1 after the completion of the piecing operation.

    • An apparatus for preventing an unwinding of a roving end from a full package roving bobbin during the transportation thereof. This apparatus is constructed in combination with the transportation mechanism formed in the known doffing mechanism or known overhead roving bobbin transportation system, in a condition such that a part of the constitutional mechanical elements of such known transportation mechanisms are utilized as a part of the constitutional mechanical elements of the apparatus according to the present invention. In the apparatus of the present invention, a pressing member is utilized for applying pressure against the peripheral face of the winding portion of each roving bobbin while this bobbin is rotating, and therefore the free end of the roving is firmly attached to the above-mentioned peripheral face of the roving bobbin. Consequently, any possible problems due to an unexpected unwinding of the roving can be effectively prevented.

Full packaged sliver cans are aligned at a standby position adjacent to and facing the aligned sliver cans which contain the smallest volume of sliver therein, and when the above-mentioned sliver cans having the smallest volume of sliver reach an almost exhausted condition, a unit sliver piecing operation of piecing a leading end portion of sliver from one of each of the full packaged sliver cans with a trailing end portion of each sliver supplied to the roving frame, created by separating same from each sliver supplying can facing thereto, is carried out in steps at all of the above-mentioned full packaged sliver cans. When the full packaged sliver cans are at the standby positions thereof, a position of an end of a sliver from each of the full packaged sliver cans is regulated to a predetermined angular position with respect to the longitudinal axis of the sliver can.
