摘要： The invention relates to a liquid crystal display device wherein phase difference plates equal in retardation value, being composed of uniaxial polymer film or the like, are disposed symmetrically at the front side and back side of an STN liquid crystal panel, and the wavelength dispersion is made nearly ideal. As a result, the phase difference is compensated over the entire wavelength region, and the azimuth angles of the exit ellipsoidal polarization are aligned. Thus, a colorless display and a high contrast may be realized at the same time.

摘要： In a liquid crystal display device using uniaxially drawn polymer film as a phase difference plate, as the elevation angle becomes wider, the difference between the retardation of the phase difference plate and the retardation of the liquid crystal display panel becomes larger, and the optical compensation relation is broken, and the viewing angle becomes narrower. To solve this problem, uniaxially drawn polymer films are prepared separately from polycarbonate and polystyrene which differ in the optical properties, and they are disposed as the optical compensation plate at the front side and back side of a liquid crystal cell, or they are laminated and disposed at the front side and back side of a liquid crystal cell.

摘要： There is disclosed a liquid crystal display device including a liquid crystal display cell layer and a pair of polarizers arranged on the sides of respective outer surfaces of the display cell layer. The liquid crystal display device further includes a retardation compensation layer having an optical birefringence which is arranged on at least one side, in a direction of the thickness of the display cell layer and between the polarizers, which compensates a change in the retardation caused when light passes through the display cell layer so as to improve viewing angle characteristics. A direction of a maximum one of principal refractive indices of the retardation compensation layer is oriented in a direction substantially parallel to a direction of the normal perpendicular to the surfaces of transparent substrates of the display cell layer.
