    • A belt for use in a continuously variable transmission comprises an annular hoop of laminated metal elements each having a body and a head joined thereto with a pair of recesses defined therebetween, and a pair of rings inserted respectively in the recesses and each comprising a plurality of laminated metal web-shaped rings. The belt is manufactured by an element production line for producing the elements through a plurality of processes, a ring production line for producing the laminated rings through a plurality of processes parallel to the element production line, and a belt assembly line joined to the element production line and the ring production line, for bundling the elements with the laminated rings thereby to assemble the belt. The elements are inspected for a produced state thereof at a terminal end of the element production line and those elements which are judged as acceptable are sent to the belt assembly line. The laminated rings are inspected for a laminated state thereof at a terminal end of the ring production line and those laminated rings which are judged as acceptable are sent to the belt assembly line. Belts are inspected for an assembled state at the belt assembly line and those belts which are judged as acceptable are delivered as products.

    • A metal ring with smaller stress concentration is manufactured, and the manufacture and maintenance of a rolling roller for transferring a mesh-shaped unevenness to the metal ring is facilitated. A mesh-like unevenness 8 is formed to the surface of an inner circumference rolling roller 6. This unevenness 8 is formed by rotating the inner circumference rolling roller 6 at a predetermined speed, and moving a grinder 9 back and forth in the axial direction of the inner circumference rolling roller 6 while biasing the grinder toward the surface of the roller 6 with predetermined force. The grain size of the grinder is between #270 and #1000. When the inner circumferential surface of the metal ring 1 is rolled using the inner circumference rolling roller 6, a mesh-like unevenness 2 is transferred onto the metal ring 1. Since the mesh-like unevenness 2 is formed by transferring the unevenness 8 having been formed by the grinder 9, the pitch of the unevenness is narrow and random, thus the laminated metal ring 1 exerts good lubricity. Moreover, by subjecting the metal ring 1 to solution treatment and nitriding treatment, a metal ring 1 having high compressive residual stress and enhanced toughness is formed.

    • An apparatus for correcting the circumferential length of a metal ring has a drive roller 2 and a driven roller 3 positionable closely to each other for training a metal ring W therearound, and a correcting roller 4 disposed between the drive roller 2 and the driven roller 3. The apparatus also has a first displacement applying unit for displacing the drive roller 2 and the driven roller 3 away from each other when the metal ring W is trained around the drive roller 2, the driven roller 3, and the correcting roller 4. The apparatus further includes spacers 21, 22 for spacing the drive roller 2 and the driven roller 3 a predetermined distance from each other when the drive roller 2 and the driven roller 3 are released from being displaced, a second displacement applying unit 27 for displacing the correcting roller 4 in a direction perpendicular to the direction in which the drive roller 2 and the driven roller 3 are displaced and also to extend the metal ring W, thereby to correct the circumferential length of the metal ring W, and a third displacement applying unit 91 for displacing the drive roller 2 and the driven roller 3 toward each other when the drive roller 2, the driven roller 3, and the correcting roller 4 are released from being displaced by the first and second displacement applying units 10, 27.
