    • A polymer dispersed liquid crystal display device includes a top substrate and a bottom substrate. First electrodes are provided on the top substrate and second electrodes are provided on the bottom substrate. Orientation are provided on the top and the bottom substrates. The orientation films are respectively rubbed in predetermined directions. A polymer material, a liquid crystal material and a predetermined amount of a chiral agent are interposed between the top and bottom substrates. The polymer material is separated from the liquid crystal material through irradiation by ultraviolet rays. The liquid crystal material and polymer material have a mutually orientated and dispersed structure. The liquid crystal material has a predetermined twisting angle in a predetermined twist direction. As a result, light is scattered when substantially normal to the liquid crystal display device and the surface of the top substrate. Thus, a polymer dispersed liquid crystal display device is obtained that is particularly bright in a specific direction.

In cases where visual display haze and contract is a particular problem in the utility of the reverse PDLC display element, such as in the case where the display element is combined with a solar battery, a sufficient amount of dichroic dye is added to the liquid crystal portion of the medium, and, further, a compound showing no fluorescence emission with respect to a liquid crystal portion, or a polymer or a chiral polymer precursor portion of the medium, is employed. The resulting electronic apparatus can, therefore, incorporate a reverse PDLC type display element in combination with a solar battery or other component that affects display quality in such elements to improve the overall visual quality and contrast in the display rendering the display more useful in more miniaturized applications.

    • A polymer dispersed liquid crystal display apparatus has a liquid crystal/polymer medium formed between spatially disposed electrodes formed spatially disposed substrates. The medium includes a polymer phase and a liquid crystal phase having optical axes alignable together in a predetermined direction. A light absorption additive is included in the liquid crystal phase to provide light absorption when said optical axes are aligned in said predetermined direction so that in the presence or absence of an electric field applied between said electrodes, two different conditions are achieved comprising alignment and misalignment of the optical axes of the liquid crystal phase relative to the polymer phase so that in one condition, a light absorption state is created in the medium and in the other condition, a light scattering state is created in the medium. The polymer phase comprises a network including a plurality of continuous strings of particles connected in helicoid formation due to the addition of a chiral component, and this network may also include separate discrete polymer particles. Also a matrix network may be employed. A reflecting surface on the side of the liquid crystal/polymer medium opposite to that of incident light will enhance the light scattering and light absorbing properties in either of the two different conditions. Alternatively, the opposite side may be a white surface providing for a high contrast display with light absorption additive in the medium of dark contrast, such as, black dichroic dye.

The liquid crystal polymer complex layer is formed by dissolving a liquid crystal and a polymer precursor to form a solution; adding a compound in which at least one hydrogen atom in a benzene ring is substituted by a hydroxy group or a compound having a benzene ring with a hydroxy group as a basic skeleton to said solution; polymerizing said polymer precursor to from a polymer; and phase separating said liquid crystal and said polymer to form a liquid crystal polymer complex layer. The compound improves the initial refractive index, and the refractive index and contrast after energize-aging.
